Auburn Undercover editor Brandon Marcello breaks down each scholarship player on the Auburn Tigers roster and ranks them from No. 85 to No. 1.

No. 30: RB Malik Miller, sophomore

Recruiting ranking: 3 stars, 0.8752 247Sports Composite; No. 23 running back

Notable: Malik Miller has battled through two knee injuries (one serious) during his career at Auburn. He had a career-high 45 yards, including a 4-yard touchdown run, against Louisiana-Monroe in 2016, but suffered a major knee injury and sat out the remainder of the season following surgery. He played sparingly in 2016 despite injuries to Kamryn Pettway and Kerryon Johnson, which provides more evidence the Tigers may not provide him many opportunities in 2018 and beyond. The Huntsville native is trying to follow in the footsteps of Johnson, a fellow Madison Academy alum, but has yet to see more than eight carries in a single game.

Miller injured his knee on the ninth play of the A-Day game, finishing one yard on three carries, on April 7.

2018 outlook: Miller still has a chance to play a big part in Auburn’s rotation at running back. He was the first running back on the field at the A-Day scrimmage as projected starter Kam Martin was held out of the action for precautionary reasons. Still, Auburn Undercover sources say it appears the top three running backs are Martin, JaTarvious Whitlow and newcomer Asa Martin.

“He’s obviously in the equation,” running backs coach Tim Horton said after spring practices. “I think when you talk about pass protectors, Malik is really good at that, and so the five criteria that we’re looking for is: Can they protect the ball? Can they protect the passer? Are they going to miss assignments; do they know what to do? No. 4: Attitude, effort and body language; how do they present it? And then the last thing, and really the most important thing, at least in this competition for me is who can make a play? Who can go make the play? That’s where, hopefully, we’ll continue to find guys who can create separation and make more plays, but that’s kind of what we’re looking for. Each one of them have done those things, but at this point I think Kam would be the [starter].”

Miller had the second-least amount of carries last season, pulling just ahead of freshman Devan Barrett. Miller had 34 carries for 133 yards and one touchdown. He also fumbled once, and had a minus-2.7 grade (tied for No. 913 overall in the country) on 80 total snaps, according to Pro Football Focus. He averaged only 5.7 snaps per game.

"Every game you prepare yourself to go out there and give it your best," Miller said in December. "I prepare for every game like I'm going to take every snap no matter what happens. But you know I'm not in position to make the play calls or who's in or who's not. I just control what I can control and go to work every single day."

Miller is on the periphery of the running back battle heading into preseason camp, making the first two weeks of August the most important of his career. And yet he still might be the best red-zone running back on the roster, which could prove fruitful should he earn playing time in a season that could feature several running backs splitting carries.
