Auburn Undercover editor Brandon Marcello breaks down each scholarship player on the Auburn Tigers roster and ranks them from No. 85 to No. 1.

No. 33: LB Richard McBryde, junior

Recruiting ranking: 4 stars, 0.9194 247Sports Composite; No. 13 outside linebacker

Notable: You may have forgotten, but Richard McBryde was a heck of a linebacker in high school. He was previously a lineman and was named lineman of the year by the Alabama Sportswriters Association as a junior. While everyone has focused on Tre’ Williams, Deshaun Davis, Montavious Atkinson and others in recent years, people have pushed McBryde in the background but we believe this could be his season to step up as a top-tier backup on Auburn’s top-15 defense. McBryde had 147 tackles, seven sacks, two pass breakups, a blocked field goal and a fumble recovery as a senior at Charles Henderson High in Troy, Alabama. He was subsequently selected to the Under Armour All-America Game and was USA Today’s defensive player of the year in the state of Alabama.

As for his latest developments? McBryde dropped five pounds since last season and now weighs 232 as he prepares to play outside linebacker. He was leaned on when Tre' Williams and others were slightly injured near the end of the 2017 season. He had two tackles in the SEC title game. Earlier in the season, he had four tackles, including a drop behind the line of scrimmage in the blowout on the road at Missouri.

2018 outlook: McBryde has the size and the speed to be a starter in the SEC, but he just so happens to be on an Auburn roster stacked with elite talent at the position — and they’re coached by one of the best young coaches in nation, Travis Williams. Williams has long been a believer in McBryde, so don’t be surprised if he’s rotating in and out of games much more often this upcoming season. We believe McBryde and K.J. Britt are in line for some big-play performances this season.
