Streaking AU women open SEC play

AUBURN - From the day she arrived last spring, Auburn women's basketball coach Terri Williams-Flournoy made it clear to her players that times had changed.

Blanche Alverson averages 12.2 points per gam

The Tigers would become a running, pressing team. And they would be that team from start to finish of every game. It was the way Williams-Flournoy built a big winner at Georgetown and the way she intended to do it at Auburn.

The results have been striking.

Going into tonight's Southeastern Conference opener against No. 23 Arkansas at Auburn Arena, the Tigers are 11-2 and on an eight-game winning streak. Arkansas is 12.2. Tipoff is set for 6.

"It's very exciting," Williams-Flournoy sad. "It's like the start of the second part of our season."

Williams-Flournoy says she is pleased with the her team's winning streak, pleased with the progress she's seen. But she wants more, much more.

"I'm probably not the right person to ask, because I see all the mistakes," Williams-Flournoy said. "But we're winning games. I told them from the beginning our style of play will always help us stay in the game and give us a great opportunity to win. We will get tested in the SEC against better teams. A lot of the mistakes we have been making we really have to clean up."

Senior forward Blanche Alverson says the Tigers are getting better with every game.

"I think we are starting to really coming into our own and figuring out what it takes to win games," Alverson said. 'It's really going to test us and we are excited to see how we match up. I think we've come a long way. We've gotten more comfortable with how we are going to play offensively and defensively and knowing when our shots are going to come. I think that all comes with getting better each game. I think we've seen that improvement throughout the season."

Sophomore guard Hasina Muhammad leads Auburn in scoring with 16.3 points per game. Junior guard Tyrese Tanner averages 12.5 points per game and Alverson 12.2. Senior point guard Najat Ouardad averages 6.6 assists per game.

Junior forward Keira Peak leads Arkansas with 13.4 points per game.
