Rewind: Auburn commit moves up

AUBURN COMMIT JUMPS IN RANKINGS: Several standouts at the Alabama-Mississippi all-star game made a jump in the rankings following standout performances in practice and the game including 4-star athlete Jason Smith from McGill-Toolen in Mobile, Ala. Smith, who was named Alabama MVP, moved up from No. 219 to No. 179 in the 247Sports overall rankings.

Smith is firmly committed to Auburn.

“The Auburn commitment proved to be a smooth and sure handed slot receiver in Montgomery,” 247Sports national recruiting analyst Gerry Hamilton said. “While the 6-foot-1, 175-pounder will need to add strength and muscle mass to his frame, he is blessed with quickness, body control, the ability to sink his hips and impressive ball skills. One of several talented receivers on the Alabama team working against some big time defensive backs on the same team, Smith was the best route runner and toughest cover this week.”

The biggest mover during all-star week was defensive lineman Chris Jones from Houston (Miss.) High, who is now rated a 5-star and the nation’s No. 15 overall prospect. Jones is committed to Mississippi State.

FOUR STANDOUTS FOR 4-STAR JUNIOR LB: 4-star 2014 linebacker Shaun Dion Hamilton from Carver in Montgomery, Ala., named a top four of Florida, Auburn, Clemson and Alabama. All but the Tide has offered.

"Right now, Florida stands out, and of course Auburn stands out, Clemson and Alabama," Hamilton told 247Sports. "I've always liked Florida since Tim Tebow was there, and it's a defensive school. It's all about defense. I like that. Auburn is close to home, it's a great atmosphere, a great fan base with a new, good coaching staff. Clemson is a family-type atmosphere and I have a great relationship with the coaches. Alabama knows how to win."

ANOTHER SEC OFFER FOR IN-STATE LB: 4-star linebacker Zach Cunningham from Pinson Valley (Ala.) HIgh added his fifth SEC offer this weekend during an unofficial visit to Vanderbilt. He was offered by Auburn last week. He’s already set up official visits to Auburn Jan. 11 and Oregon Jan. 18. One of his offers is a grayshirt from Alabama, which Cunningham said he’s unlikely to take.

“Alabama’s not really in it now,” Cunningham told 247Sports. “I’ve got full rides to the other schools though it is Alabama so I’d say it’s probably the last option that I’d look at.”

NEW SEC HOMES FOR FORMER AUBURN COMMITS: Two former Auburn commitments committed to rival SEC schools after visits to those schools over the weekend. Three-star linebacker Jarrad Davis from Camden County in Kingsland, Ga., committed to Florida while 3-star safety Lemond Johnson from Cooper City in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., committed to Tennessee.

“Going there, just seeing all the facilities and the people in the office and everything just being in place, it’s just a great place to succeed and set you up for the next level and all that stuff after school. It’s just a great place,” Johnson told 247Sports.
