Recruiting 101: Auburn's footprint

Where do Tigers come from?

Montravius Adams was one of three Auburn signees from Georgia in February. The Peach State has produced 18% of the program's signees the during the past 10 years.

This probably won't shock anybody, but the answer is …. Alabama, Florida and Georgia.

Over the weekend, Auburn Undercover took a look back at the past 10 Auburn signing classes to get a snapshot of the Tigers' recruiting footprint. And, as it turned out, it was about what we expected. There were, however, a few surprises.

All told, from 2004-2013, Auburn signed 261 players. That includes 22 from Junior College and four from prep schools.

Of that total number of signees, 86 -- or 32% -- have come from Alabama. Florida was next with 49 (18.7%), followed by Georgia with 47 (18%).

For this article, we counted junior college players toward the state in which he played JUCO ball. So Cameron Newton, for example, goes under the Texas category, even though he's from Georgia.

AUBURN SIGNEES BY STATE THE PAST 10 CLASSES
Alabama: 86 (32%)
Florida: 49
Georgia: 47 (1 JUCO)
Mississippi: 17 (7 JUCO)
Louisiana: 11
Kansas: 10 (all JUCO)
Arkansas: 6
Texas: 5 (1 JUCO)
California: 4 (3 JUCO)
Tennessee: 4
Colorado: 3
South Carolina: 3
Virginia: 3 (all prep school)
Kentucky: 2
North Carolina: 2
Arizona: 1
Delaware: 1
Illinois: 1
Indiana: 1
Maryland: 1
Missouri: 1
New York: 1 (all prep school)
Ohio: 1
Oklahoma: 1

These classes obviously run over three different coaching staffs. So to give you a closer look, let's go year by year with Auburn's big three big recruiting states. Note: Tommy Tuberville coached through the 2008 season, Gene Chizik from 2009-2012.

2004
AL - 6, FL - 5, GA - 7

2005
AL - 8, FL - 4, GA - 4

2006
AL - 10, FL - 5, GA - 4

2007
AL- 8, FL - 10, GA - 2

2008
AL - 10, FL - 10, GA - 3

2009
AL - 11, FL - 1, GA - 6

2010
AL - 11, FL - 3, GA - 8

2011
AL - 10, FL - 3, GA - 5

2012
AL - 6, FL - 4, GA - 5

2013
AL - 6, FL - 4, GA: 3

As we noted, Florida has produced slightly more overall Auburn signees than Georgia, but that is skewed by the numbers from 2007 and 2008, when the Tuberville regime signed 20 total Floridians.

What these numbers show is that Auburn hasn't had to go very far to find players.

Will these trends continue under Gus Malzahn?
