I had the honor and pleasure Friday of visiting with two newswriting classes taught by Dr. Jennifer Wood Adams, the journalism program director in Auburn’s department of communication and journalism.

Students asked some great questions and we had good discussion about journalism, the newspaper business, the explosion of Twitter and more. It was a most enjoyable morning. …

I always get a kick out of hearing announcers struggle to know what to say when things don’t go as they expect in the early days of the NCAA Tournament. I’m particularly amused when they seemed surprised that the players on underdog teams aren’t as awed as they are by the supposed great teams. …

No. 15 seed Florida-Gulf Coast’s victory over No. 2 seed Georgetown on Friday was probably the biggest upset in NCAA Tournament history. Florida-Gulf Coast wasn’t even eligible for the tournament until last year. Its best player is a former walk-on. The coach left private business, where he’d made a fortune, to coach the team and is married to a lady described as a super model.

The Eagles (I had to look up their nickname) got into the big show by beating regular-season champion Mercer to win the Big Sun Conference tournament. That’s the same league in which Samford played before moving to the Southern Conference. They probably won’t win another game in the NCAA Tournament, but the young men who got it done Friday have a memory for a lifetime. …

We’ll have more videos and photos from spring practice this year than we’ve had in a long time. The first 30 or minutes or so of every practice is going to be open the media. Will we actually see anything that matters in those 30 minutes? Doubtful. …

Why do apparel companies like to put basketball and even football teams in the ugliest uniforms imaginable? Do people really replicas of those things? …

It’s not likely, but it’s possible that Auburn’s football team could go into next season without a first-time starter at any position. …

Auburn junior Olivia Scott won her first individual national championship Friday in the 100-yard butterfly. Good for her. The Auburn team was in 15th place and is not a championship contender. The men could be strong contenders next week. …
