It’s make or break in 12 days

Crunch time for Auburn’s 2012 recruiting class comes in 12 more days.

Diggs visited Auburn last weekend.

Signing Day is big for every school, but for Auburn this year, it will be decisive. As many as 14 top targets are expected to announce their decision on Feb. 1 or within a couple of days before or after.

For Auburn, currently ranked No. 17 in the 247Sports team recruiting rankings, it will make the difference between a third-straight top five class or one that comes up short of expectations for 2010 national champions.

“Leading into January, I think a lot of people would call Auburn’s class a little disappointing because of the expectations coming off a national championship and the expectations that this coaching staff builds for itself,” 247Sports national recruiting analyst Barton Simmons said. “But as expected, they have really positioned themselves for a typical Auburn close.

“If the pieces fall right, this could be one of the phenomenal late closes that we’ve seen in a while with the amount of 5-stars they’re in the mix with and just the bulk of talent they’re knocking on the door with. Even if they miss on the big dogs, I think it’s pretty obvious they’re going to close strong. It’s just a matter of how strong.”

Still on the table for Auburn are five prospects ranked as 5-stars, seven 4-stars and two heavily recruited 3-stars.

Four of Auburn’s 5-star targets are scheduled to announce on Signing Day in wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson, defensive tackle Eddie Goldman, defensive end Arik Armstead and cornerback Ronald Darby. Five-star receiver Stefon Diggs is expected to announce a few days after Feb. 1.

More Signing Day decisions are scheduled to come from 4-star offensive linemen Avery Young, Jordan Diamond and Menelik Watson, 4-star defensive end Leonard Williams, 4-star linebacker Kwon Alexander and 4-star defensive back Deon Bush, who is committed to Miami but still considering Auburn.

Four-star quarterback Jeremy Liggins will announce on Jan. 30 while 3-star offensive guard Alex Kozan and 3-star safety Jordan Moore could have a decision within a week.

Of course, this list doesn’t include any late additions or surprises this Auburn staff has been known for and that could add even more intrigue to the closing days of the 2012 recruiting class.

In just 12 more days, most of those questions will finally be answered.
