BMATT247: What a week

Auburn took major strides towards building a highly-rated recruiting class this week with commitments from 4-star linebacker Tre’ Williams, 4-star JUCO safety Derrick Moncrief and 4-star defensive end Justin Thornton.

Williams is the nation's No. 3 inside linebacker.

The three additions moved the Tigers from No. 38 to No. 15 in the 247Composite team recruiting rankings. That’s a big move and the potential is definitely there to move even higher.

Auburn has seven commitments. Every team in the top 10 has nine or more commits. The teams in the top five have 10 or more.

The other big mover was Auburn assistant coach Dameyune Craig, who was the lead recruiter for Williams and Thornton. He moved up 31 spots to No. 3 in the 247Composite recruiter rankings.

It started Wednesday when Williams chose Auburn over a host of offers including Alabama, Florida, Ole Miss, USC and LSU. He’s Auburn’s second linebacker commitment joining 4-star De’Shaun Davis, who committed last month.

The Tigers would like to sign one more linebacker in this class with 4-star Rashaan Evans from Auburn (Ala.) High being the top target.

On Friday, Auburn landed Moncrief, who is rated the nation’s No. 1 junior college safety and No. 6 overall junior college prospect. Moncrief is expected to play the Star position at Auburn but will also get a look at both free and boundary safety.

Thornton committed to Auburn Sunday.

Auburn hopes to sign two more safeties in this class and two of its top targets are 4-star Ronnie Clark from Calera (Ala.) High and 4-star Cortez McDowell from Locust Grove (Ga.) High.

The week ended on a high note as Thornton chose Auburn over LSU and Texas A&M and about 20 other offers Sunday. He’s Auburn’s first defensive line commitment, which is a position that is a big need for the Tigers’ in this class.

Moncrief is also Auburn’s sixth in-state commitment and fourth from Mobile, which is Craig’s hometown and recruiting area.

The Tigers would like to sign as many as five more defensive linemen, two ends and three tackles, with a number of top targets left on the board including the nation’s No. 1 overall prospect, 5-star defensive end Da’Shawn Hand, who visited last weekend.
