#BMATT247: A great season to end

For Auburn quarterback commitment Jason Smith and linebacker commitment Reuben Foster, tonight will be a night of extreme joy or bitter disappointment.

Can Foster slow a high-octane McGill offense?

The two square off in Mobile as Auburn High School travels to McGill-Toolen for a second-round matchup in the Class 6A playoffs. Both have had remarkable seasons.

Smith has led McGill to an 11-0 record and No. 2 ranking in the ASWA poll. He’s accounted for over 2,000 yards passing and rushing and 32 touchdowns. McGill’s high-powered offense is averaging 44.0 points per game. Their defense is giving up just 16.5 points per game.

Auburn High School is 10-1 and No. 4 in the state, their only loss coming to No. 3 Carver and Auburn quarterback commit Jeremy Johnson. The Tigers are loaded with top college prospects including Foster, Texas A&M athlete commit Cameron Echols-Luper and 2014 defensive end Rashaan Evans, who already has 16 offers.

Foster has close to 70 tackles on defense and has become a weapon on offense with 14 rushing touchdowns. Echols-Luper has accounted for over 1,600 yards passing and rushing and 16 touchdowns.

I will be at McGill for the game tonight. The winner will face the winner of the Daphne-Opelika game in the third round.

Johnson and Carver face a tough battle on the road against Fairhope, which is coming off a 10-0 win over Davidson in the first round. Johnson has combined for 2,900 yards passing and rushing and 36 touchdowns this season and Carver is averaging 45.3 points per game.

On the other side of the 6A bracket, Auburn linebacker commit Cameron Toney and Huntsville will try to continue their late-season surge as they host Vestavia Hills in the second round. Huntsville (7-4) has knocked off Clay-Chalkville, Gadsden City and Florence in the last several weeks.

Vestavia is 8-2 and No. 9 in the state.

In 5A, defensive lineman Dee Liner and Muscle Shoals will host wide receiver Earnest Robinson and Pinson Valley in the second round. Muscle Shoals is 11-0 for the first time in school history and ranked No. 1 in 5A. They are scoring 40.3 points per game and just giving up 6.3.

Pinson Valley is 8-3.

Several more of Auburn’s commits are in action tonight. No. 1 Camden County (9-1) and linebacker Jarrad Davis will host Hillgrove in the first round of the Georgia AAAAAA playoffs. Camden County rolled through the regular season until a 13-12 loss at Colquitt County last week.

Also in AAAAAA, defensive end Carl Lawson, who has 24 sacks this season, will lead Milton in a game at South Gwinnett, and tight end Arshad Jackson and Lovejoy host Tri-Cities.

Defensive end Tashawn Bower will lead Immaculata against Gloucester Catholic Friday in the 1st round of the New Jersey Group 2 playoffs.
