Auburn to host UAB in WNIT

AUBURN – The Auburn women’s basketball team will head to the postseason in the first year of the Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy era as the Tigers were selected to the WNIT field Monday night. It is Auburn’s fourth appearance all-time in the WNIT and its 22nd all-time postseason appearance.

Terri Williams-Flournoy has led Auburn to a 16-14 record in her first season.

Auburn is 8-2 all-time in the WNIT with previous appearances in 2003, 2007 and 2011. The Tigers won the WNIT in 2003 under Joe Ciampi and advanced to the second round in their last appearance in 2011 under Nell Fortner.

“We are really looking forward to playing in the WNIT,” Williams-Flournoy said. “Making the postseason in our first season here at Auburn was a goal of ours, and this will be a great experience for our players as we continue to build this program back to where it should be.

“You cannot simulate the tournament atmosphere and what it means to play for a championship and we are excited that our young ladies will have that opportunity.”

For Williams-Flournoy, this is her fifth postseason appearance in nine seasons as a head coach and her second WNIT appearance. She led Georgetown to the NCAA Tournament in 2010, 2011 and 2012 after making a WNIT Quarterfinal appearance in 2009.

Auburn is 16-14 and UAB is 18-12 going into Wednesday’s game. He Tigers have a 29-4 all-time edge and a 15-game winning streak against UAB that dates back to 1992.

"I am extremely proud for our team on being selected to the prestigious WNIT," UAB coach Audra Smith said. "Our women fought hard all season and are very deserving of a postseason bid."

Hasina Muhammad leads Auburn in scoring at 14.3 points per game. Tyrese Tanner averages 12.9 and Blanche Alverson 12.8. Karsima Chapman leads UAB with 13.6 points per game. Amber Jones averages 13 and Ashley Grimes 12.8.
