Auburn downs Ole Miss, 30-22

AUBURN, Ala. -- The box score from Saturday night's Auburn-Ole Miss game shows the Rebels with more passing yards, more total yards and more time of possession.

Auburn's response to that?

Scoreboard.

Making big plays when it counted most, the Tigers held back No. 24 Ole Miss, 30-22, in an exciting battle before an announced crowd of 86,504 at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

"Obviously, a very big win against a good team," Tigers coach Gus Malzahn said.

Auburn, which won three games in 2012, is now 4-1 overall, 2-1 in the SEC.

Ole Miss fell to 3-2, 1-2.

A year ago, the Rebels beat Auburn 41-20 in Oxford, Miss.

Among the highlights for Auburn on Saturday ...

*Quarterback Nick Marshall rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns. Four Tigers have had 100-yard rushing games this season. That's an Auburn first.

*Senior defensive end Dee Ford, junior defensive tackle Gabe Wright and true freshman defensive end Carl Lawson had two sacks each -- one apiece for Wright and Lawson on the final Ole Miss drive, which ended when the Rebels turned it over on downs with just over two minutes left.

"Carl is starting to grow up," Malzahn said.

*All told, the Auburn defense recorded 14 tackles for loss

*Auburn "star" Robenson Therezie had a 78-yard first-quarter pick six that put the Tigers up 13-3 and sent a charge into Jordan-Hare Stadium.

"It was a bad throw," Rebels coach Hugh Freeze said.

*The Auburn rushing attack amassed 282 yards on 48 carries.

*Ole Miss was only 5 of 19 on third down.

"I'm very proud of our defense," Malzahn said.

-Vs. Top-10 teams on the road, Auburn was 2-5.

-With Cam Newton as QB, Auburn was 6-0. Without him, it was 4-15.
