Tre’ picks the Tigers

MOBILE -- One of the state of Alabama’s top overall prospects has committed to Auburn.

Tre’ Williams, a 4-star linebacker from St. Paul’s in Mobile, Ala., announced his decision during a press conference in the school library Wednesday afternoon.

"I decided to go ahead and enjoy my junior year so I'm going to go ahead and make my decision," Williams said. "The college choice I'm going to pick today is Auburn University."

Williams, 6-foot-2 and 217 pounds, chose the Tigers over his four other finalists: Alabama, Florida, Ole Miss and USC.

He also had offers from LSU, Florida State, Clemson, South Carolina, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Louisville and Louisiana-Lafayette.

"I think Auburn is the best fit for me," Williams said.

Williams has visited Auburn more than a dozen times over the past couple of years including twice in April. He plans to return May 25 for Big Cat Weekend.

A two-time All-State selection, Williams had 113 tackles as a junior. He finished first in the 5A shot put state championship last weekend, edging out teammate and Auburn 3-star offensive line commit Joshua Casher, who finished second.

Williams is Auburn’s fifth commitment in the 2014 class joining Casher, 4-star linebacker De’Shaun Davis from Vigor in Mobile, Ala., 3-star running back Kamryn Pettway from Prattville (Ala.) High and 3-star tight end Chris Laye from Lambert in Suwanee, Ga.

Auburn assistant coach Dameyune Craig is the lead recruiter for Williams along with Casher, Davis and Pettway. Another Craig recruit, 4-star defensive end Justin Thornton from Vigor in Mobile, Ala., will announce a decision between Auburn, LSU and Texas A&M Sunday.

"I've known Coach Craig since my freshman year. He gave me my first offer back at Florida State. Ever since then, we've built out relationship" Williams said. "When he went to Auburn it made it even better. I already kind of liked Auburn. At the time, I knew it was a battle between Auburn and Alabama and me and Coach Craig talked nearly every week.

"We talked more than just football. We talked about personal life and family."

Williams will play in the Under Armour All-American game in January. He is rated the nation’s No. 3 inside linebacker and No. 39 overall prospect in the 247Composite.
