Thank God for Fairley...... pics.

  • OK, so I can only post three pics per post over here but I wanted to show you guys just how important Nick Fairley was to us in the National Championship. This is a first and ten from the 30 for oregon middle of the 1st quarter. they have us in man coverage and they trot James out of the backfield leaving him one on one with Josh Bynes (who lord bless him, is slow as smoke). We have Fairley lined up in his usual 3 tech outside the guard. When they go in motion and clear the backfield they only have 5 to block the 6 defenders we are sending. This opens things up for quick Nick to go to work,,,,, he stems inside the guard and gets a free run to the QB. Thomas does not have time to get the ball off to james and instead throws a pic to the free safety. God Bless you Nick....

  • He dominated that game. The Ducks seemed to really underestimate how dominant Fairley was and how quick he got off the ball. Darron Thomas made a huge mistake talking trash and calling Fairley a dirty player before the game. When you're a lanky quarterback, you don't piss off the 300 lb DT that had already knocked a couple quarterbacks out of games. They actually were making their read off Fairley...a huge mistake because he is too good to be left unblocked, as the Ducks would learn.

His stop on 3rd and 2 in the beginning of the 2nd quarter is a perfect example of this. Herbie is wrong when he says James could have walked in for the TD if Thomas had given him the ball. Another broadcast later on showed Fairley's eyes were locked on James until the last second. But anyways, the Ducks chose to leave Fairley unblocked on 3rd and 2 and Thomas was to make his decision depending on what Fairley did. Unlike most DL they had played, Fairley was too good and too fast to be left unblocked. You can see this in the Pictures below.

In the first one, you can see he is turned directly towards James and in the second he is in perfect position to make the tackle if Thomas gave James the ball. The 3rd picture shows how his eyes were locked on James. Then, in the 4th picture, in the post below, he switches his focus to Thomas in a split second and tackles him for a loss of yards!

    I'll miss Fairley!

  • why in the hell they thought the inside read would work with Fairley as the read is beyond me. He is easily the most agile defender we have. I guess they thought he was penetrating that fast because he was out of control coming off the ball.... Little did they know that he could redirect that fast. Poor silly ducks... Really bad idea. Why not read Clayton (like midline read) and cut fairley out of the equation?

  • Good stuff AUVTM. Coaches are stubborn sometimes. I think Kelly had the mindset that he wasn't going to change what got them there and it didn't work out for them. They had not seen a DL as quick as NF and it's hard to practice against it. It went beyond NF in that game though. Our entire DL dominated the game and was the difference in the end.

Watching Chip Kelly being interviewed with Gene Chizik showed me a lot about him. Gene Chizik, confident. Chip Kelly, arrogant. Pride goes before the fall.

    I agree, Good stuff AUVTM!

When I see these pics, I can't help but think of little nicky's freudian slip, "If Fairley gets blocked right here, WE walk into the endzone." It's so great to know not only that we dominated the supposedly unbeatable, flashy Oregon team, but that Saban inadvertedly confessed his chagrin!
