I like New Jersey governor Chris Christie, but having the flags in the state flown at half-staff for Whitney Houston is not a good idea. I don't mean that as disrespect to Whitney Houston, but flying them at half-staff for an aged pop-star that died of an overdose is incredibly disrespectful to the families of those out there that died in Iraq, Afghanistan, as police officers, or as fireman.
I think if my child had died in battle and I saw the flags at half-staff for Whitney Houston, I would be pretty insulted.
Maybe I'm overreacting, but I just don't like it at a time when we still have soldiers in harms way all over the world. Soldiers that are actually dying doing something honorable. Whitney Houston was an incredibly talented singer, and her life ended tragically, but what about it was honorable to the point of earning the respect of having the flag of the United States flown at half-staff?

Agree JA. +1.
Not pointing to her in particular but when we drop flags to half staff for those with simply great talent, it opens a door. What about when a great athlete dies? Who gets "half staff treatment" and who does not? The more we do this, the more it is expected.
And the more it is "expected" for certain people, the less it means to us all.

OT: Flags at half-staff for this?
