OT: Flags at half-staff for this?

  • I like New Jersey governor Chris Christie, but having the flags in the state flown at half-staff for Whitney Houston is not a good idea. I don't mean that as disrespect to Whitney Houston, but flying them at half-staff for an aged pop-star that died of an overdose is incredibly disrespectful to the families of those out there that died in Iraq, Afghanistan, as police officers, or as fireman.

I think if my child had died in battle and I saw the flags at half-staff for Whitney Houston, I would be pretty insulted.

Maybe I'm overreacting, but I just don't like it at a time when we still have soldiers in harms way all over the world. Soldiers that are actually dying doing something honorable. Whitney Houston was an incredibly talented singer, and her life ended tragically, but what about it was honorable to the point of earning the respect of having the flag of the United States flown at half-staff?

  • Agree JA. +1.

Not pointing to her in particular but when we drop flags to half staff for those with simply great talent, it opens a door. What about when a great athlete dies? Who gets "half staff treatment" and who does not? The more we do this, the more it is expected.

And the more it is "expected" for certain people, the less it means to us all.

You're damn right. This is insulting to me as an American. I have no ties to the military, but every person in our armed forces has my utmost respect. No disrespect to Whitney Houston because she was an amazing talent and I'm sure a good person, but she died because of what she did to herself. Meanwhile, 1000s of U.S. soldiers have died over the last decade or so, where was the half-mast flags for them?

Another good point. When you lower the flags to half staff for a celebrity that dies of a drug overdose, it loses meaning for me.

  • Agree completely. If a drug overdose was indeed her cause of death, she died over something she could have controlled with proper help. Soldiers who die in the battlefield have far less control over the bullets flying at them than she did of her situation. It's amazing who the media and often times people in our country proclaim to be heroes.

  • Your not over-reacting, but Whitney grew up in Newark, so it may be a NJ thing. And the guvna may be running for re-election.

Think you are exactly right. I like Christie (JA said the same in the original post), yet disagree with him on this one.

But lowering the flags may be much easier for him than fighting a battle where he is accused of "disrespecting" Whitney Houston.

Christie is not up this year, but that day is coming soon enough. Not defending him here, but he may have done this to avoid a future campaign issue.

  • Sick....Whitney Houston found dead filled with alcohol and drugs, and the country loses it's collective mind. Young soldier found dead in Afganistan filled with shrapnel, and it doesn't make the evening news. I fear that American has died, and we are just now smelling the stink.

  • Insulting to me as a military vet who was spit on and called a woman / baby killer when going through the LA airport after returning form VN. Not that I expected a hero's welcome home, I was just happy that I made it home alive. When we immortalize a celebrity who most likely took her own life abusing alcohol & drugs for years and is certainly no more important to society than the average lady or gentleman who passd away from natural causes our moral values have gone to hell. I suppose Christy caved to political correctness.

I understand why it is like this, but it still sucks. Now that I've calmed down and had time to think about it, it makes sense. Does she deserve more recognition than a soldier of our armed forces? Absolutely not, but many of us grew up to Whitney Houston music and she was a pop culture icon. On the other hand if the media reported every Armed Forces casualty there has been, I believe mass depression and hysteria would set in. We all realize how many tragic deaths have taken place overseas, but if we were to be reminded of them every single day then the country would tear apart.

  • Maybe alot of you guys are in the know, I just was wondering if the autopsy report been released. If so did it report all this, or are you assuming this from past practices? Am no saying that I agree with it but its the Gov. call to make.
