How does Coaching Carousel work in NCAA 12?

  • I dont get it.

    JCoo09

  • You only get to see 2 coaching positions at a time. You only get to check out the first coaching position. If you don't look at the contract then the position will usually pass you by. You will not know what school positions are available past the 2 that you can see. You won't know when it ends until it ends. Don't be fooled by some of the positions available as it may be the school extending the contract to their current coach. If you get offered a job and accept you will not get offered a job for the remainder of the positions. It is a gamble, If you accept something early you miss out on something better later or if pass on an offer you may miss out and not have a better offer later. The good thing is if you save before the carousel you can always turn off the game and start over and the same exact positions will become available in the carousel again.

  • Ok thanks. Does the flashing six squares with coaches in it mean anything? I know it does that for some coaches, but then others I just get offered the job. And what is the point of the unexpected openings tab?

    JCoo09

  • The six flashing squares is like a "randomizer" for choosing the coach. Although, In my second finished season I started my carousel over 3 times because I first passed on the HC @ FSU thinking I could get something better. Then I kept going and decided that I was getting close to the end and finally chose to go with Stanford DC. As soon as I picked it the AU DC position popped up and I decided to start over to get the AU DC job. I went all the way back through the list and it turned out AU decided to extend its own DC. So I had to start back over and I ended up taked the FSU HC job. I am saying all that because there were 2 schools who had the "randomizer" option and both times, both schools chose the same coach. So its not actually that random of a choice.

The "unexpected openings" tab is for jobs that unexpectedly come available during the carouse. For example if the FSU HC job came into the carousel and they chose to hire a different coach. The DC and OC would then pop into the "unexpected openings" tab. You can look at the contracts for these position while they are in this tab and the more you look at the contract the more interested the school will be in you. Sometimes they will offer you a job while they are in this tab and sometimes they won't. The unexpected jobs will eventually show up in the carousel and then you will run out of time to make a decision on them.

  • and so looking at the contract throws your name into the ring? If offered the job the options are decline, review contract, and stay with same contract. What is the difference in the first and third?

    JCoo09

  • Yea it does but sometimes you will look at the contract and the school will say they chose to look in a different direction. That will let you know if the school has any interest in you.

The difference is declining will allow you to keep looking at the other contracts that may come up and possibly get an offer. If you choose to stay with same contract then none of the other future schools will offer you a position because you entered into a contract. Reviewing the contract is where you go to sign the contract. It is good to note that "IF" you get offered a position and do not want to accept it and don't want to stay at your current school then you should decline it. If you choose to "stay with same contract" then you will be locked in to your current school for another season.

  • I will say: I am midway through my 3rd dynasty season (1st as HC of FSU) and once you become a HC some of your goals have to do with recruiting. These goals are tough to satisfy. I started out as a DC with FIU and went to DC with Baylor. Those goals were easy. The recruiting goals are hard and time consuming. It is significantly tougher as a HC then as a Coordinator. But I like that aspect.

Also, as soon as you win a BCS bowl game as a coordinator you will become the highest prestige coach (5* or 6*, cant remember). Once this happens you can get any job that is available. I one the Fiesta bowl with Baylor and I was the top candidate for every HC job available (included FSU, Penn St., Washington, and Wisky).

  • alright thanks. I just didnt understand why the random boxes would pop up and sometimes wouldnt.

    JCoo09

  • Yea I don't know why some schools do it and others don't. That makes no sense to me either.
