Hey y'all could some of you all be free to let me know how Coach Roof was for your program? I realize his defenses were ranked usually below 40, but I have heard several reasons of which I have no prior knowledge. So any info would be gladly appreciated.
Disclaimer: This is just my opinion and I have no special knowledge or authority.
Ted Roof is an outstanding man. His players were absolutely devoted to him. For the most part, our defenses during his tenure were not at the level that Auburn fans had come to expect. There is some thought that there were differences in philosophy between Coach Roof and the head coach - who was also a former defensive coordinator - and that these differences led to unwanted results on the field. These differences did not result in personality clashes; from all accounts the two men got along and worked together very well.
It should also be noted that in the last two and a half games of the 2010 season (Alabama, SEC Championship, and National Championship), the defense was outstanding. In the National Championship game, Oregon was held to less than half of their average points per game.
My personal opinion is that Coach Roof will be more successful at Penn State than he was at Auburn that you got a good man for the job.
Thank you Trumpet. That makes sense of some of what I have pieced together. I appreciate the input.
Does anyone else have any thoughts or opinions on this?
Roof's 3 defenses while at Auburn were arguably the worst 3 defenses in Auburn history. I don't doubt that he is, as some have noted, a fine, well-loved man. But I'm glad he isn't our DC anymore.
I wish him well in his new job.
Thank you again to all of y'all that left comments or opinons. It helps me understand what is being brought to the table.
well said, trumpet -- I could not agree more and could not have said it better.
Very good coach. Better man. Agree wihh several of the previous posters. He seemed to have a slighly different philosophy from the head coach which could have made things very difficult but both were professional and worked together. And the hurry-up/fast strick offense we ran probable scewed some of the defensive numbers over the past years. I think you will be happy with him.
