Since we've beaten the pro/con bp horse to death and the flies are now beginning to gather, I think it would be more interesting to discuss who we'd like as assistant coaches. I know, I know - we need to hire a HC before we start worrying about assistants but I think it'd be interesting to find out who everyone would like to see as assistant coaches by position with being influenced by who is head coach. I'm not talking about some pie in the sky choice like an NFL OC coming back the college level in the same capacity. I'm talking about legitimate candidates.
These are the coaches that I'd like to see stay at AU (and please don't say that the new HC will bring in their own assistants - I KNOW that - this is a just for fun, take our mind of the HC search kind of exercise):
DC - I'd like to see BVG stay on - I'd love to see what he would do with the strong defensive recruits who have committed to us (at least those that stay committed). These would be players that he's chosen to recruit based on the type of defense he runs. I'd also like to see what he can do with the current players when they're not mad at the special treatment received by others or receive the special treatment themselves. As we've all learned BVG is doesn't guild the lilly. He's in you face, my way or the highway, no effort means no playing kind of guy - when he's not being undermined by other coaches. You could hear and see his building frustration as the year wore on. I'd like to see Martinez go though.
OL Coach - Grimes didn't just all of a sudden forget to how to coach - I think he was affected by the same special treatment disorder that affected the team. Think about it - you had Dismukes who according to sources spend 3 HOURS pushing the sled (or whatever) back and forth on the field for public intoxication, yet you had others who received a slap on the hand for doing much worse. Also, I think the shootings during the summer had the most direct affect on the OL. Eric Mack was part of that close knit group of OL's and it had to have had an affect. They would be inhuman not to feel it.
QB Coach - I'd honestly like to see what Loefler could do if he only coached QBs. That's his area of expertise and the particular thing he was praised for after his hiring.
RB Coach - Coach Loop did a good job with RBs - see MDyer and Tre Mason - however, he had a crappy OL this year and I don't think even Earl Campbell would have been able to run behind them.
The jury is out on TT - receivers have been a big disappointment. I wouldn't mind seeing him stay on but in a different capacity - and certainly not as assistant head coach.
I'd love to see Boulware stay - our special teams play has been one of the only continuous bright spots since he was hired - not sure what happened to our punter this year though - he has struggled all year.
Pelton has to go.
If BVG doesn't stay - I'd cautiously like to see Rocker come back as DC - the only reservation I have is that he's never been a coordinator before - I'd think he'd leave the Titans though to come back as DC. One thing we know for sure - like BVG - if you didn't pull your weight and go after it and give 110%, you'd find yourself riding the pine or helped to find the exit door.
I'll have to do some more research to come up options for the other coaching positions but this is a start. I'd love to see everyone else's ideas.
