Wife Away and ...

  • Yesterday my wife flew out to visit her sister in Phoenix. So, last night I bought a pizza, got a beer (or two), and re-watched the national championship game between Auburn and Oregon. What a wonderful day (and year) that was. But, it occurred to me while watching it, that other than Super Cam and Monster Fairley, that this was truly a team win. More than a few were over-achieving their 'star rating', no doubt, but AU won because they were a committed team. Last year, we had high 'start ratings' all over the field and had one of the worst records ever. As signing-day approaches, I am encouraged by what our staff is doing, AND I am quite hopeful of what they will do with our current players on the roster. If this group comes together as a team, they can beat anybody on the schedule NEXT season. It was a good night -- pizza, beer and National Championship -- not a bad night with my beloved away. War Eagle!

I agree with you that the team won in 2010 because they were a "team" that did what they had to do at their role and position and did it as a team. And that is a huge difference between that team and what we've seen the last two years. No question.

But your post also made me curious about the recruiting rankings of the main players on that team. So I did a quick rundown, maybe missing a couple guys, but I think I got most of them.

(This is all according to Rivals because 247 obviously didn't go back far enough)

    5-star
    Cam Newton
    Michael Dyer

    4-star
    T Bell
    Emory Blake
    Josh Bynes
    Kodi Burns
    Bart Eddins
    Mario Fannin
    Eltoro Freeman
    Michael Goggans
    Corey Lemonier
    Philip Lutzenkirchen
    Onterio McCalebb
    Mike McNeil
    Brandon Mosley
    Mike McNeil
    Ryan Pugh
    Craig Stevens
    Jeff Whitaker
    T Zach
    Lee Ziemba

    3-star
    Darvin Adams
    Mike Blanc
    Antoine Carter
    Nosa Eguae
    Zac Etheridge
    Nick Fairley
    Dee Ford
    Byron Isom
    Eric Smith
    Neiko Thorpe
    Demond Washington

    2-star
    Daren Bates
    Zach Clayton

    Total - 34 players
    5-star - 2
    4-star - 19
    3-star - 11
    2-star - 2

For me, the most over achieving / underrated were Zach Clayton, Darvin Adams, Mike Blanc, Nick Fairley, and Byron Isom, with Clayton being the most underrated overall I think.

If you go down our current roster, we have that same mix of talent. It's just a matter of getting it out of them and salvaging some careers of guys that have been wasted or guys that have been coasting. I'm hoping for a pretty dramatic and significant turnaround in the program without having to replace 60 bodies first. It may not be from day one, but by the end of year one, I suspect we might be pretty competitive. Year two....well, let's not get too far ahead.

  • Amen, Jonathon. This is Gus's team, full of players Gus recruited, being coached specifically by coaches Gus hand picked. If I hear Gus even hint one time about being young, I will surely puke on the spot. Every single peice of the puzzle is there for Gus to win big now. I feel confident, based on what I have seen Gus do in the past, that he will find a good QB for his offense from what is available now. Kicker and Punter back. Offensive and Defensive lines loaded with talent and experience. Coaching was all that they were lacking. Skill positions are loaded. Plenty of talent and experience in the Defensive backfield. There is one spot that is absolutely horrible. LBs. in my opinion, we have never seen this bad of LB play in Auburn since the 70s. I blame 90% of that on Gorder. He told us after the Clemson game that he had no idea what he was doing versus the spread and he wasn't lying. He was awful. I believe a real coach can make Jake Holland a sound LB. which isn't close to All Star, but it's miles from where he has been in the past.

  • Absolutely zero excuse not to win big now. By big, I'm talking at least 9 wins, with 10-11 certainly not out of the question.

I don't know about 9+ in 2013. It's most likely going to take some time. I'm guessing we're a 9-win quality team at the end of the year, but we might start the year as a 5 or 6-win quality team. In other words, we are likely to get better as we go, but could start off losing to teams early that we would have beaten later (such as Washington State, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, etc).

Anyway, go down the schedule, and be totally honest...where are nine wins coming from?

  • I would not ever say that any team is impossible to beat. Looking at the list, jadennis, I see three games in 'probably not a win' category, UGA, A&M, and Bama, but in the other nine and with improvement in QB play I think we would-could-should stand toe to toe with everyone else. Maybe a more reasonable measure of success would be how close to 9 wins this team actually achieves. To me, poor is five or six wins; great would be 8 to 9.

That seems reasonable, and I think the "how close" is a good gauge. But I think the issue will be that we play so many beatable teams early, but we may not be quite up to speed early.

In other words, if we played Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and Washington State in games 9, 10, and 11, we'd like go 3-0 against them. But instead, we get them in games 1, 3, and 5. I'm just not sure where we'll be in the first five games, especially if the QB is a new face.

And no matter what, everyone will be learning new things from new coaches, except some offensive guys dealing directly with Gus....but that isn't many. The receivers, the offensive line, the tight ends, and the running backs....even though they might know Gus, most of them will be dealing with a new coach. Actually, as I write that, only Kiehl has really worked directly with Gus before. Wallace, Johnson, and JUCO guy will all be new to Gus.

So like I said, if we're playing like a 9-win team at the end of the year, I'll be happy, even if the actual record is 6-6. From those that remember better than me, they say that even at 5-6 in 1981, you could watch that team and see 9-3 coming in 1982, and 11-1 coming in 1983.

So even if we're 6-6, I just want to "see" 10+ coming in the near future.
