War Eagle Dad moment

  • It was December 2nd, 1972, and my mom and dad were given tickets to the Iron Bowl. Although avid Auburn fans, it was rare for us to go to many games (thank God for radio!). So, not really having good game day attire, dad bought an Auburn fadora style hat there at the stadium and once inside he stuck his ticket in the orange and blue trim. Most of us on this board know the game -- Auburn's fantastic 'Punt Bama Punt' 17-16 victory (Can I get a big War Eagle!). After Auburn blocked the 2nd punt which was returned for a touchdown, a nearby Bama fan poured his nearly full Rum-laced cup of Coke on top of my dad.
Anyway, after the game, mom and dad are on the bus transport to the off-sight parking area jammed filled with Bama folks. Dad did not say a word, just stared ahead wearing his new and very coke stained AU hat ... just smiling and thinking about the game. When the bus arrived at the parking area, an older woman came to dad and said, "Thank you for not rubbing Auburn's victory in our faces. You truly are a gentleman." Dad responded with a kind "Thank You." The very next person, a young sweet blond late twenty something woman says to dad, "I don't care what she said. I hope you f--------- die tonight!"
When dad got home, I am not too sure what he was more glad about -- Auburn's miraculous comeback or being doused with Rum/Coke or being blessed out by this high society Bama girl. Dad passed away nearly 8 years ago, and even though he battled Alzheimer's those last five or so years, that was one memory he never let go.
War Eagle and have a great day!

Really shows the differences in class. Sounds like a good Auburn man. Enjoy the memories.
