Defeat doesn't finish a man - quit does. A man is not finished when he's defeated. He's finished when he quits. - Richard Nixon

  • Didn't look at the video but anything to make the sport safer. I ha e had my nose broke with aplastic face mask, while spitting blood and hair out of my mouth. After I came to my senses, it was a do over, line up and smash again right after a concussion. At Auburn, ive seen thousands of violent hits. One day, they toted a friend, Jess Simpson TE, off the field in a stretcher with him woozy and bleeding out of both ears and his nose! There's a difference in being a man and being stupid. It would be stupid not to make this sport as safe as possible for it's participants!

  • Concussions are no joke and second impact syndrome is even worse. It only makes sense to limit the number of head impacts kids take when they are young because concussions can be cumulative if the concussion is not allowed to heal completely. Very young kids like the ones in the video should be learning techniques more than plain hitting drills for the sake of hitting.

Beside proper coaching, common sense and head gear there needs to be a cognitive baseline to be established for kids. There is a cognitive assessment available for concussions called an ImPACT test. Every kid playing a sport should have an ImPACT test performed as a baseline so that when a concussion occurs everyone will know when they are completely healed.

My daughter has had 3 concussions playing soccer since she has been in high school. Each time the ImPACT tests showed when she returned to her baseline. One concussion took 6 weeks to recover from. Two girls in her high school never fully recovered from their concussions and had to give up sports.

For my daughter, there have been no noticeable long term effects from the concussions, she is an honors student, getting an academic and athletic scholarship to play D-1 soccer next year. She signs her National Letter of Intent tomorrow. Pretty exciting day for us.
