On Thursday Tallahassee (Fla.) Lincoln Rivals 250 linebacker James Hearns received a call from Florida which caused him to open up his recruitment.
Four-star linebacker James Hearns
Basically, what it boils down to is that he and the University of Florida have split ties. It had been known for some time that Hearns had a bit of work to do in the classroom and he said that was what brought the split about.
"Coach [DJ] Durkin called me about ten minetes ago," stated the linebacker. "Florida didn't really want to try to wait. That, along with me wanting to look around at other schools, we had to part ways."
Hearns stated UF will no longer be an option going forward for him but said there are a few other schools that he is looking at.
"I am going to Kentucky this weekend and am excited to get to see coach [Mark] Stoops and hang out with him. He did big things at Florida State and has been recruiting me for a while. He said he has faith in me working with my grades and said as long as I qualify by the end of school he would honor my scholarship."
With the Gators out for the 6-foot-3, 230-pound big man, he will no longer visit Gainesville the last weekend before Signing Day but said there are a few schools he is debating on checking out that weekend.
"I have thought about using that weekend to see Houston, Washington, or South Carolina. Those are a few schools that I have talked with here lately and I want to see what they have to offer."
The Gators now sit at 25 verbal commitments for the 2013 class with the loss of Hearns and four at the linebacker position. Dayton Beach (Fla.) Mainland Rivals 250 linebacker Quinton Powell still is still an option for the Gators at the position.
