Torn ACL

12/24. Wife tripped and fell at Lowe's today. Swelling and extreme pain in knee. Limited ROM. Getting worse.
Question. Can we wait till Wednesday to see ortho guy/gal, or do we need to go to hospital?
I don't think hospital will order MRI.
Anything we can do at home till Wednesday?

Sorry to hear that. Hope she gets to feeling better. Find you a med size bag, fill it with ice and wrap the knee. do it 20min on and 20 min off a couple times.

Give her two advil for pain. Elevate her leg and ice the knee area. If it continues to swell you might need to go to the ER. But it can get twice the size.

Father-in-law is an ortho, he just said ice and take it easy. Unless there is a fracture, they aren't gonna be able to do anything for ya.

A large bag of frozen English peas works even better than Ice. Been through it twice and Dr. didn't even want to look at it for 48-72 hours.

I.C.E. - Ice, Compression, Elevation. These three are the norm. Pain is the key. If painful even at rest and immobile, then go to the ER. They won't do more than what everyone has said, except provide access to some pretty darn good drugs. Hope your wife is able to avoid the ER and enjoy Christmas.

torn my ACL so many times it no longer exists. Never had surgery till a few years ago then to remove all the minuscus. no hospital necessary unless you choose. Ice is the secret. She will have a stiff leg for about a month then normal walking with no pain. She will have alot of pain in bed tonight so keep a pillow under her knee. Naproxin is the best over the counter medication i found.

That sounds like a great idea. I tore my ACL and MCL in high school. The only reason I suggested going to the ER was if the swelling doesn't stop. She may have a ruptured artery. Highly unlikely, but you never know.
To the OP... I hope your wife finds something to make her comfortable until she can see a doctor... Merry Christmas

Probably a torn meniscus.
Pain is brutal. Ice. Elevate. Ortho won't see you until Thursday is my guess. Pain gets better after 5 or 6 days.

My wife has torn her ACL twice and the best thing you can do before seeing a doctor is take something to reduce the swelling, ice, and begin rehab. There is nothing you can to do help your knee, but begin strengthening your quad and hamstring. Lay on the couch and with your leg straight, lift it in the air in reps of 10. Also keep your leg straight on the ground and try to make a muscle with your quad. These exercises will make the rehab after your surgery much easier. The rehab sucks regardless, but you will be ahead of the game just by strengthening those muscles. She played college volleyball and this is what she was told to do by her trainer. They also said they have never seen such a quick rehab which was due to her per-surgery rehab

I walked/ran on a full-thickness tear of an ACLfor two months before going to the doc, another two months before letting them reconstruct. Ice, Advil/Aleve and rest. There is ZERO need to go to the doctor/ER right now unless she just can't tolerate the pain.
I'm also a PT.
