Time for Stern Oversight Again!

  • If the NCAA and institutions themselves have been paying attention the past ten years or so, especially given the fact they are now (almost) considering offering the players financial stipends, then they should realize now is the time to bring back the athletic dorm, the training meals and most importantly, the oversight. We should have a designated assistant coach (or two) stay in the dorm each night to keep the curfew and monitor behavior - year round, not just during the season. Random drug and alcohol tests should be conducted regularly and ditto room and car searches. And if a player goes out of town, he should know that he is subject to a drug test the minute he returns. Would players be using synthetic marijuana under these conditions? Would they be robbing people at gunpoint? Would they even HAVE a gun in the first place? Also, surelyour coaches must realize that some of these guys are just ticking time bombs. What kind of high school troubles did these "robber boys" get into back in high school? Every major program, it seems has similar incidents every three or four years. Was Chette surprised by all this? If a player is on scholarship, he should expect his behavior to be supervised, if not scrutinized! Sorry for the rant, but I am sickened by Dyer's testimony that drug use was rampant in the program.

  • Sorry, but three former players, two of which are now facing jail time and one headed to school in the Ozarks, drinking beer and smoking 'spice' does not constitute 'Rampant Drug Use' in the Auburn football program. The few articles I have read (ESPN.com) say nothing about rampant drug use in the program.

Just ranted about this on the board. I'm looking to the jornalists to keep reports of Dyer's testimony acurate - looks like they failed and hooked some of us with their slanted crap in the process.

  • Rampant or not, I ain't happy, and I blame the NCAA and the individual institutions for abandoning the athletic dorm, etc. all those years ago. And whether Dyer said that or not, he admitted to using the stuff, plus all those guys were using it. Also, when this originally broke, the story was that these guys needed rent money and so they robbed someone to get it. Who knows if that is true, but if it is, then it proves my point even more. Surely you're not disagreeing with my point about needing more oversight...?

  • Simmer down WePaw. Bring back the dorms, not the KGB.
I know what you are saying however. It's disappointing and you just want to shake some sense into these kids before they mess up too bad. This event makes my heart sick. Wasteful.

Why not line the parents up to a firing squad while you are at it. Didn't they teach their children any better? Get real. It happens everywhere. Some cases worse than others.

  • Rampant? Chizik was speaking at a fund raiser in Nashville for an inner city mentoring program the night this went down and he said, "you'd be surprised by the backgrouds of many of the kids playing college football." It's unfortunate that these guys did these things, but there's no one claiming rampant use but you.
