I was fortunate to be at AU at the same time as Mitchell, Pepto Bolden, Eddie Johnson, Mlles Patrick, Wayne Brace, Gary Redding and Stan Pietkiewicz. I was a freshman in '74 and lived in the Quad so it was easy to just on over to watch a game. We went 12-0 at home and 18-8 for the year and finished 3rd in the SEC. The last game of the season was against uat and it was huge for several reasons, #1 - winning meant we would be undefeated at home; #2 - beating uat at anything is always good but I this win broke a long streak of losing to them (can't remember the number) and they were 22-4 at the time.
Some of you young pups might not realize how big of a feat it was to go undefeated at home but consider this. There was huge talent throughout the SEC that year. UT had the Ernie and Bernie show (Ernie Grunfeld and Bernard King). They finished 3rd in the SEC. Vandy had a kid we called "bird legs" but can't remember his name and they had just come off back to back 20+ game win seasons and went to the sweet sixteen just the year before. They only finished 5th in the league with a 15-11 record that year but beating "Vandy" after the couple of years that they had just had was big. uat finished tied w/ KY for 1st in the SEC and had a record of 22-5. Did I mention how HUGE this win was? Kentucky was well, Kentucky. They had Kevin Grevy, Rick Robey and Jack Givens. Finished tied with uat for 1st in the SEC and went on to play in the title game where they lost to UCLA. Final SEC Standings that year were 1T - KY; 1T - uat; 3T AU; 3T UT; 5 Vandy
So you see that going UNDEFEATED at home that year was BIG, BIG, BIG. Watching what was probably one of the best and most talented from top to bottom AU basketball teams ever was an experience I'll never forget.
