Auburn has placed a big emphasis on recruiting elite special team players.

  • Is it possible that the new rule will lead to a team recruiting a strong leg kicker for FGs (45+yards) and a regular kicker with a leg like a Pitching Wedge for kickoffs?...shrug

  • I notice one of our kicker candidates is from Colorado. Anyone know if kicking and/or punting averages are higher in the "elevated" states like Colorado. Thinner air, less resistance. Wonder how the Colorado kid's kicks will be adversely affected by the humidity and thick air of Alabama.

  • Its nice to not worry so much about special teams. In 2009 and early 2010 it looked like Jay Boulware didn't know what the heck he was doing.

Turns out, he does know special teams. They kept us from having a couple more losses last year. I'm thinking we will be even better this year. Defense and special teams will win games.

I hope that we never question Van Gorder's ability as a defensive coordinator. Great players will take care of that.

    Hey,
We already passed the helium test!
But I guess that was for punting now that I think.

It was pretty obvious that Auburn's coaches were trying to find players that both could and would on the football field and that was pretty tough in 2009. Lot of unearned coach criticism. As recruiting picked up, coaches seemed to get smarter. Players dropping punts were a favorite reason to criticize Boulware. fans criticizing Roof became de rigueur on AUC pages.

I doubt there is much difference. The altitude here in CO does make the air less dense, and, because of this, a ball will travel further here than it would at a lower altitude that has the same level of humidity (very low humidity here). However, believe it or not, humidity also makes the air less dense (water molecules weigh less than O2 or N2 molecules). i.e. The ball will travel further in a humid environment than it would in an arid environment assuming both environments are of a similar altitude. So, CO has an advantage with the altitude making the air less dense, but AL has an advantage with the humidity making the air less dense. Without getting into real detailed calculations, my guess is that it is probably a wash.

Tell that to the teams that play the Rockies in Denver...biggrin
