Thoughts on Auburn's Potential Coaching Changes

  • 1 Some people should simmer down all the knee-jerk philosophizing.

2 Auburn has gone undefeated 3 times in last 18 seasons--all three times under completely different coaching staffs. As Chiz once said, it's Auburn that attracts recruits, not just great coaches & recruiters. It's Auburn--the place, the school, the support, the atmosphere, the rich tradition. Coaching staffs have come and gone, and Auburn still comes back to the top (What is it they say about cream?) No disrespect to any of our coaches, and much credit goes to them, but the fact stands about the undefeated seasons under different coaching staffs. No other team in the FBS has 3 undefeated seasons in the past 20 years. Not bama, not LSU, not Miami, not Ohio St., not USC, not even Boise with their pathetic schedules... no one but Auburn.

3 We shouldn't be so attached to all our coaches, or put so much stock into them that we feel like scared little children watching their parents walking away forever. It's football, not life, and there are a lot of really good coaches out there who also happen to be great people.

4 Sometimes change is good. It keeps things fresh, and on the cutting edge. Adding a new coach or two could improve our program and team since everyone has unique experiences and knowledge.

I'm not saying these things to downplay coaching turnover and its impact, but sometimes these things have a way of turning out better than anyone predicts. How many of us desperately wanted Chizik to come back to Auburn as a head coach?

    Agree.
The days of coaches going to a school and staying forever are over.
Coaches come and go. AU will be fine. I'm sure we'll hire some new and up and comer and he'll either be fired in 3 years or get a head coaching job.
Just seems to be the way it goes.

  • It doesn't get any better than Joe Whitt Jr. I wouldn't mind Huepal or Kliff Kingsbury either one. Those two guys would be great with the quarterbacks. No we won't run a 3-4. We're at least 3 years from running that properly. We're built around the 4-3 and the growing pains to shift into a 3-4 would be devastating to this program.
