Petrino came to AU in 2002 and made our offense shine. He was an obvious offensive talent and got a job as HC with Louisville after one year. Our offense suffers in 2003 and some of the PTB try to get Petrino in an ill-timed move - because he did such a good job at AU for one year as OC and was doing a good job at UL. Petrino misses on AU but goes on to show he is a proven offensive mind but adds BIG concerns with his integrity or lack thereof.
Flash forward to 2008 . . . . Auburn's offense is absolutely sucking wind and Tubby goes down in flames. In comes Chizik who hires Malzahn who lit up Arkansas' and Tulsa's offenses for several years. He immediately identifies that Kodi Burns is an outstanding person but not a SEC QB and moves him to WR. He takes an absolutely horrible 2008 AU offense and a weak QB and breaks records with it the first year. In 2010, he compels Chizik to sign Cam and he coaches him to a Heisman trophy and AU's first BCSNC . . . . breaking more records along the way. AU's D was SOLID against the run (led the SEC?) and just good enough on pass D to do their part.
We go into 2011 with a dessimated team void of seniors and juniors due to Tubby's weak recruiting but we get to 8-5 and go to a bowl. Chiz starts medling with Malzahn's offense after game 3 and he can't take it and leaves with a pay cut to Ark State where he is in charge. He installs his offense and has immediate success with the players he inherited in that league and wins a conference championship with an impressive blow out win against a team that beat one of the ACC division champs - GaTech.
Now tell me what is different about Malzahn's record as an offensive genius and what he has been able to achieve realtive to where he is in his career compared to Petrino at the same point in his career??? Malzahn is just as hot if not hotter. And Bobby's defenses at Arkansas where he was the HC have sucked by the way.
Use your brain and let's just see what happens. I can't, for the life of me, see why we shouldn't be as excited about what Malzahn can do offensively as Petrino can. Heck, Gus only brought us our 3rd Heisman Trophy and 1st BCSNC.
I am on the Gus Bus and so should you! War Eagle!!!

The only meaningful definition of a 'generalist' is a specialist who can relate his own small area to the universe of knowledge.
