The Gus Bus

  • I would like y'all opinions on this. There is no dought Gus turned AU's offense around and he will always be one of my favorite AU coaches, but do y'all think the Gus Bus had run it course? What I mean is...had his offense become ineffective against the talented, speedy, and hard hitting SEC defences? We seemed to do very well against (as what most would consider) lesser talented teams, but when up against teams that had equivalent talent or superior talent, we struggled. I know we had no Cam, a new OL, and only one proven WR, which would make any offense less effective. However, there were times when we looked completely ineffective. Lets say if Gus had stayed, would he had returned our offense back to the levels as before, or were we really running a gimmick offense which had become obsolete in the SEC. Please don't consider me a Gus hater...I'm just asking a question on a slow day.

I'm an Auburn man and I'm darn proud of it!

  • my opinion is his offense is QB driven. Reviewing his stats at previous stops his QBS had great years. See Todd's senior year. Something did work. i will always credit him for our NC but at the same time this year was a fiasco. i also know he did change his play calling to go more conservative but i will never understand why he would not incorporate some under center dive plays or slant routes to cover short yardage situations. if he would not be so stubborn and make some slight additions i think it will still work.

  • If you have guys that can line up and beat the guy across from them, any offense will work.

No other OC in the conference put up 20+ points two years in a row against the best defense in the country in AL. He had little talent to work with this year which was the result of some poor luck on the OL with young guys.

  • Well, Gus was great in 2010, but we had a great O line, 2 good rb's in Dyer and McCaleb, and our wide outs were good, Not to mention the best QB in college!!!. 2011, although we were young, inexperienced, etc. the offense was not good, every good team we faced seemed to know exactly what play we were calling. I like him for what happened in 2010 and wish him well as a head coach, CGC made the right move in changing up the coaches, I am so excited for spring football and 2 see how this team evolves. Change is good and we are moving in the right direction.WDE

  • Gus is a great OC however no offensive scheme or playcalling will be effective without a good offensive line. Pass blocking was pitiful this past year due primarily to lack of talent and youth. The OL and DL are usually where football games are won. I hated to see him leave.

  • Gus would have been fine IMO. There was something missing however. I felt we had much less movement than past seasons (i.e. SE racing across the backfield during snaps etc.) Defenses never had to move their eyes as much as they had in the past.
Secondly, our tackles were just getting blown up all season and we had far too many penalties on 1st down.
If JAdennis could research the information I would hypothesize that when Auburn committed a foul on first down or had a play blown up by a "lookout" block, then we punted 90% three plays later.
Auburn hurt Auburn more offensively more so than the defense they faced IMO.
Good kids on the line of scrimmage, but not our best talent at the bookends.

  • I actually agree but have a little different opinion. I think the offense can still be effective against defenses if the talent is equal. In fact LSU would have been better off in the BCS championship game with our style of offense. However, I believe the offense has run it's course when you look at the full picture (i.e. negative impact on our defense). I can't help but remember the 2009 bowl game when a couple of kids were about to pass out after 100+ plays. I just don't think any defensive coordinator in his right mind wants to be the DC when Gus is running the offense. I like Gus but when you look at all the changes we've made it's obvious we felt like we needed a change on offense for the defense to consistently have a chance. The 2010 BCS included two of the better offenses but not two of the better defenses. However, in 2011 it was the defense that mostly dominated the SEC (LSU, AL, GA, and SC) with Arkansas as the exception. I've watched the 2010 games over and over it will always be an incredible year but I don't think you can consistently produce an offense that can dominate in the SEC consistently. I also find it interesting that the DC that Gus hired at ASU didn't last long. I think the offense is great for a mid major.
