The Case For Bobby Petrino

  • I understand Bobby Petrino is a good coach. However, due to his most recent past history....is this what we want to represent the leadership of a good football program? I understand each person deserves forgiveness, but, what kind of message are we sending to the younger generation about morality? I think if the leadership decided to replace a coach, there has got to be someone else out there just as good who also displays good moral standards.

Look, Jon Dennis has already said this better than I can, but since you either didn't read his post or chose to ignore it, then I'll try to sum up as best I can.

To put it simply, there is simply not a coach I can name that you will accept as equally or better qualified simply because, in your mind, there is no other coach that compares to Petrino. Every time someone mentions any other coach that they would rather have, you dismiss their choices outright for increasingly ludicrous reasons. I can probably name twenty coaches that I would rather have, but you'll just tell me that they are either unavailable, coach in crap leagues, haven't had the success Petrino has had, coach in the NFL and know nothing about college football, can't recruit, etc. etc. etc. etc. Ad Nauseum.

And dude, I'm not singling you out. People on both sides are using equally implausible and fallacious reasoning to either bash or praise Petrino. Look, I fully admit that I have an extreme bias against Petrino, but even I admit that he'd probably be a least as successful at Auburn as he was at Arkansas. I admit my bias against him, you need to look in the mirror and admit your bias towards him and allow yourself to at least consider the possibility that there might actually be at least one coach out there that might, MIGHT, be able to do a better job at Auburn than Petrino.

Because there isn't one that would realistically come to Auburn. John Gruden would be a huge homerun in my opinion, but that's slim to none that will happen. Everything else just won't happen or they aren't near the coach Petrino is.

One thing I don't agree with in that article at all is him saying Tennessee is a more prestigious program than Auburn. How in the hell is Tennessee a more prestigious program than Auburn?

Other than them being a larger school, with a larger, more affluent fanbase, a bigger stadium, better annual attendance, more overall victories, more SEC victories, a higher overall winning percentage, a higher SEC winning percentage, more SEC championships, more bowl appearances, more bowl victories, and more recognized national championships, I can't think of a damn thing.

I don't if that's true though. Jimbo and his staff make a combined $1.8 million less than Chizik and our staff. That's a lot of money to throw at a guy to go to a place that we already have reason to believe he is fond of. No guarantee, but I wouldn't say it's a long shot. The real challenge would be if FSU is willing to throw more money at all of them.

Dantonio leaving Michigan State would be no different than Saban leaving Michigan State to go to LSU....or Meyer leaving Utah to go to Florida....or Miles leaving Oklahoma State to go to LSU (and turning down Michigan to stay). The question would just be whether he wanted the challenge of taking on his old boss, Saban, and his alma Mater, South Carolina.

None of that is to say that those are clearly the best choices. The whole premise was just to point out that those who may not want to endorse the coach with the worst reputation in all of sports can actually present reasonable alternatives.

Again, the forced notion of 1. Chizik, 2, Petrino, and 3, Billy Graham is just...well, not an honest attempt at discussion.

I in no way take any of this personal.

And whwn I ask I'm not looking to ding someone for it. Look back, I didn't do that in any response. As a matter of fact, once Jimbo Fisher came up i actually began discussing his pros and cons.

My point is simple, we may be looking to replace the football coach. Hire the best football coach.

Last year you had Rich Rod, Sumlin, Fedora but they all took jobs & are in year 1.

I just contend CBP is the beat option available as a FOOTBALL COACH.

  • We may not all want Petrino.....but he couldn't be more controversial than when we hired Chizik. If we don't take the opportunity to get Petrino, someone else will and if its someone in the SEC and that someone in the SEC starts kickin our butts every year we will start griping and whining about why didn't we hire Petrino when we had the chance. His wife forgave him....his family forgave him....his AD cried when he fired him...he screwed up (literally) but who is beyond forgiveness and righting his ship. All you who talk about forgiveness need to man up....I think Petrino would be perfect hire.....when else would someone try his dead level best to turn his reputation around? He would do everything in his power to succeed coaching wise and character wise..... otherwise he might be drummed out of coaching in the SEC forever. If we don't take him we're dumb.....it's business and nothing else.

  • We gotta have Petrino. I don't care if puts on lip stick while watching rambo and eating smores at home. He is a winner at every stop. He has won with lesser talent on the field thus his record against sabear is scewed. We could be competetive right away with this guy and BVG and the talent he has!!

What if I told you that: There. Is. Not.

Unfortunately, Tom Coughlin, Bill Belichek, Jim Harbaugh, Nick Saban, and Pete Carroll won't take our job.

You forgot completely irrelevant in the past 12+ years, douchebag. In that time Auburn has won a National Title, 2 SEC Championships, 2 undefeated seasons, has a Heisman winner, and Tennessee hasn't beaten us since what? 1999? Auburn is currently a more prestigious program. No one thinks of Tennessee as a top program anymore and Auburn is about to fall into the crap of the SEC too if we don't make the right hire.
