Auburn from day one.
Glad to see the post and I completely agree. I did not like Petrino as the coach to begin with but have warmed up to him. I've also gotten frustrated seeing a lot of the negative post. Not to bring politics into it but I feel like many of these people posting remind me of many conservatives during elections. If they can't have the candidate they want, they are ok not voting for someone they may disagree with on 5% of the issues even if it means electing someone they disagree with on 90% of the issues strictly out of ideology. In a perfect world there would be that great coach sitting out there that had no personal flaws and would come in an win championships. Unfortunately we don't live in a perfect world.
Petrino is a really good coach, great, who knows, and as one recent story stated, no one hires great coaches, they become great based on their records. Petrino already has two big strikes against him which should give us the leverage on his contract. Unless there is a better option with several years of successful head coaching experience, I say put together a contract with the following and give him a chance to prove to us and his family that he can be successful and has learned from his very poor personal choices. If he screws this great opportunity up, he knows he will have a hard time getting a HC position for another major university. His contract should have some the following:
* Lower salary and incentives based on football and academic success (similar to other coaches)
* No tolerance for the types of personal issues and things he has done. If problems start, we can fire him with no buyout
* If he tries to leave in the next 4 years on his on, there is a buyout that must be paid
* All hiring decisions must also be approved by the AD
Let's make it clear that we will give him one chance if he screws up he is gone. I expect he is also walking a thin line with his wife and he realizes this would be a great opportunity to redeem himself, focus on football and stay clean. Worse case, he comes in and quickly cleans up this mess then we have to fire him in a couple of years, best case, he comes in, cleans up this mess and becomes our coach for a long time. Again, I expect given the opportunity after all he has gone through, he will walk a very straight line and focus on making Auburn football successful and the fans support him.
