The simplest answer is usually the closet to reality. The dude was duped.

I would have thought that at the beginning, but that's just simply not the case. When you fall for someone, it's hard to see the obvious signs. He was duped. The voice on the other end sounded female. Now, we can get into why he claimed he met her and why he didn't fess up, but I can imagine when you're an All-American football player it would be hard to admit you found a relationship online, hell, there is enough stigma around it for everday people. Once he knew, it was probably hard to step up and admit it.

Naivety doesn't always creep into the academic side of things.

Nobody is that stupid, and this kid is apparently very bright. And the majority of guys out there would want to have a face to face call with someone if the technology was available.

If he is gay that is his business so don’t let that get you all worked up.

My theory is logical and no one knows what the real facts are. This kid has been caught lying already.

The simplest answer is that he made up a relationship to hide another relationship. Being committed in a long term relationship to someone you have never seen face to face doesn’t make sense. Something along the way would have tipped him off. If your girlfriend died, wouldn’t you go to the funeral, or at least look up the obituary? Or call someone in her family. If she was sick and dying, wouldn’t you go see her.

I have heard of lots of people who have real relationships with girls to hide that they are gay, I have never heard of anyone having an extended relationship with a girl that is making it up (over a long period of time).

As stated by myself and others in this thread Academic intelligence does not equate to emotional intelligence. Te'o by all appearances wasn't in a "committed" relationship with Lennay. And Te'o was in constant contact with people he thought were Lennay's family members. His grandmother and Lennay both died on the same day. Whose funeral do you go to, your grandmothers or some chick you've never met?

Ok, First of all, Manti's response to if he was gay was weird. Secondly, I CANNOT believe you can spend over 500 hours on the phone with a 22 year old man and never catch on to it.
