Tennessee breaking out the checkbook

  • From Chancellor Jimmy Cheek:

"As we face a transition in our football program, I want to make it clear that we support a mission of comprehensive excellence in our athletics department. Under the leadership of Vice Chancellor and Athletics Director Dave Hart, we will do the things required to return ou
r team to national prominence. As we begin our search for a new coach, I have assured Dave that he will have the support and resources he needs to be successful.

For the next three years, the money the athletics department has contributed to the campus will be reinvested in the athletics department. Relieving athletics of this commitment will allow the department to add an average of $6 million per year to its bottom line for a total of $18 million over three years.

The money was committed under different circumstances and we now need to allow athletics to use these dollars to attain financial stability and invest in the future."

In other words, Vol Fans, $18 million is being set aside over 3 years for the upcoming coaching change.

    Do it.

I sent the article to Dr. Gogue last night with links to the original UT Sports Information press release. I would like to see many of you do the same thing. Dr. Gogue is reading his emails.

  • """"The University of Tennessee is cutting $6 million from academic scholarships and fellowships over the next three years to help its athletics department, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel.
The department, already facing a $4 million budget shortfall, is now paying roughly $5 million to buy out the contract for former football coach Derek Dooley, who was fired Sunday.
John Vrooman, a sports economist at Vanderbilt University, recently told the Nashville Business Journal that the cost of ditching Dooley would not be cheap.""""
