Ted Roof

  • So, when all is said and done, what grade (A - F) do we assign Roof?

First half there sure were lots of calls on blogs for him to be fired. Second half he looked fairly (no pun intended) brilliant. Defense does seem to adapt well after imploding first halves in many games. Plus up to now, the D has always managed somehow to allow us to win at the end, after a clutch second half. Is that our players courage and grit as much or more than our coaches' effective adaptive strategy?

Give him the midpoint = C? Worse? Better?

  • He gas done a great job with the players he has. Nothing against our players, when you are 5'-9" covering some receivers that are 6'-3"+ you will not always make the play. He has adapted well, kept the guys focused, and provided the offense the opportunity to win the close games.

As of now he gets a B+ with two very important "EXTRA CREDIT" assignments still due.

  • B. Young and learning defense. The offense sputtered just as bad. Did anyone call for Malzahns job in the first half? No. All is well on both sides of the ball. The fact that we adapt to teams mid game is very impressive and Roof is a large part of that.

  • B+. There is only average talent to work with in the backfield. CTR coaches linebackers and the front 7 has been phenomenal this year. And frankly, his in-game adjustments have been game-savers at times this year. He's an amazing game-day coach. I think Chizik can help him with the game planning (which I'm sure he does anyways).

  • Until we get some taller CBs and faster safeties it will be hard to match up with the elite WRs you see in the SEC. Washington and Bell are both talented kids, but they are under sized. Bell is playing bigger than he really is and has stepped forward.

Roof has done an excellent job making adjustments and working with the talent that he has. Rocker might be the best DL coach in college football.

The height of the corner doesn't matter if he is ten yards off the reciever and already beat. But we tipped several balls away when we had their guys covered. It looks like our coverage is starting to improve. Can you imagine how scary good we can become with just an average defense with a upside to look forward to? Of course it is never a static environment, you are either getting better or getting worse in all facets of the game. But the future looks bright. WDE

The reason we are playing back is because we don't match up well against guys like Jones or Green. If we had a guy like Rogers back on the team you would see Roof play tighter coverage.

  • Thorpe's played with a cast on his arm upon till Friday, Washington's small, the safeties play the run great but can't run with the speed guys. However J. Rose will start next year as a true freshman, Bell's going to be great, Davis will be a real weapon with experience. There's more young guys developing, hopefully we'll be as good at LB next year. Roof's done well with what he has, I'd give him an A- simply because he's passed 12 tests without the benefit of having all the answers in hand. Real coaching is winning with what you have.

    Much better than a C.

At 12-0, the guy simply can't get anything worse than a A-.

  • I'll give you a grade on Jan 11th but I agree with others - I trust CGC to make whatever decisions are needed. He's certainly earned our trust. Like CTT said, if he said tomorrow was Thanksgiving I'd go out and buy a turkey.

Just saw an Okla St player do a "Karlos Dansby" and Herbie recalled the play immediately. Like him or not he's a pretty sharp guy and knows his football.

Those that have felt that our d-coord. did a good job last year with what he had and continued through this year to improve. Those that understand the game and how it's played I commend them for their knowledge. Those that did not and do not still don't have a clue.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.....

We're only one year removed from almost having to suit up Aubie at linebacker. Given the lack of depth when this coaching staff arrived on the defensive side of the ball I think that Ted Roof has done an outstanding job. He's did a hell of a job with what we had in 2009 especially with so many DB's going down. Our coaches added some outstanding youth and depth that have contributed already this fall, but experience is lacking.

Somehow, folks, we've got to get out of this "instant gratification" mode. Progress is being made on the defensive side of the ball. Alafumble came out of the shoot yesterday with an outstanding gameplan and it worked for about a quarter and a half. Adjustments were made and we only allowed 67 yards in the second half!

    A few things to consider:

    1) We're still in building mode on defense that began with a bare cubbard left by TT.

    2) As long as we have the type of offense that Gus runs we're not going to have many (if any) of the old Pat Dye signature defensive units that averaged 7 to 10 points allowed per game.

    3) It was obvious to me that when Chizik and staff came to town (less than 2 years ago) a heavy focus in the initial recruiting efforts was to build an offense for Gus to scheme with.

Instead of each team having an average of 6 to 8 posessions per game in the 1980's we now have games that each team has the ball 12 or more possessions. We're going to allow some points plain and simple.

IMHO we have the best collective coaching staff that work harder than any I've ever experience in Auburn this very moment! Sit back, let them do the job they were hired to do, and enjoy the ride!

Please let's not pick ourselves apart. Leave that to alafumble. We're better than that!

  • Not sure what the problem was in the first quarter...but rest of game Auburn dominated defensively. The suspended players added alot more depth in 2nd half, but if I remember right, Fairley was out of game for 2 series for bammer and they scored quickly on those series....without Fairley....it would have been a different story in my opinion...Fairley is key in opening opportunities for others. I listened to Stan, Rob & Q, after the game. Here a few things that caught my ear.

Q said in the first half that on several series that the whole defensive line consisted of all Freshman and Red Shirt Freshman. That is very YOUNG playing uat at JHW. baby

They all agreed that Goggins & Blanc would may an impact on the defense after sitting out the first half due to suspensions and they did. lock

I would agree with your statement except for the D-Line. JMOshrug
