Stat Bomb of the Week

  • Let me start by saying WAR EAGLE! I attended Auburn University until I graduated in 2009 with a Mechanical Engineering degree. I currently work for the U.S. Army as a reliability engineer and I have nearly 3 years of civil service.

Needless to say, being an engineer I do a lot of statistical analysis at work. I love the field of work, but I love football stats much much more. There's nothing I hate more than an argument or claim without any factual support. This weekly thread is intended to inform my fellow classy Auburn fans with the cold hard facts... mainly to provide fuel to the fire in those ridiculous watercooler conversations with obnoxious bama fans that think their program is God's gift to football. I understand your pain, because I work with Bama homers just like you do. Let the upcoming stats be the bullets for which you feed your mighty conversation cannons Auburn fans. Always remember the old USMC adage, "Superior thinking will always overcome superior numbers."

I'll do my best to post a new thread weekly on Thursday afternoons with juicy new stat bombs. I'm always open for suggestions and requests for new posts, and lastly thanks for reading!

  • This week’s stat bomb has to do with coaching success in bowl games. I was really curious how a few coaches, that have won national titles recently, compared against each other in post season play. Below you’ll see the bowl game records of three current SEC coaches as head coach. All college head coaching experience is included.

    Gene Chizik (3-0)
    Nick Saban (7-6)
    Les Miles (6-4)

After seeing these records, I wanted to dig just a little bit deeper into the success, or lack thereof, of these three coaches. Below you’ll find the bowl records of these three coaches when they served as either head coach or a coordinator. Only college coaching was considered, no NFL experience.

    Gene Chizik (8-0)
    Nick Saban (8-8)
    Les Miles (6-5)

Just as much as last week’s stat bomb, I was astonished at these results! Gene Chizik certainly knows how to prepare his team for post season play! Now if we can only get a plus one or a playoff in college football! WDE Auburn fans!

I think your stats are misleading still. Satan's average bowl may have been BCS in nature, which to me means a tougher opponent, a more evenly matched opponent, and hence, an opportunity for the result to go either way. Coach Chiz's bowls, may have been lesser bowls. Given the latter comment, you'd think that all bowl match-ups should be relative (even). But they're not and this year, at least in my opinion, the rules of bowl match-ups (what # in one conference will play what # from another conference) were such that we saw some rather bad match-ups and lop-sided results.

So while I agree with you that stats are good, you still cannot look at them in isolation. SEC is much stronger than most other conferences

I still think it is pretty awesome to be undefeated in bowls, and Coach Chiz has coached in TWO BCS national championship games and should have been in a third (Auburn, 2004). That right there is over a third of his bowl games. Pretty good record no matter how you slice it.

Stonewall, look forward to this weekly!

Wow wargator you're dropping some juicy stat bombs of your own! Impressive! And just so everyone knows, this was the second installment of the stat bomb topic. You can see my first bomb that dropped last week if you click on my name.

Thanks for all the support everyone and I can't wait to hear how our big recruiting weekend goes!

I agree and I should have been more forthright in my appreciation for the stats and the idea of a stat bomb each week; it's a great idea of the OP's and I too look forward to receiving them - very much appreciated. #WDE

No hard feelings EMMB! You make a good point that not all bowl games are created equal. But as wargator mentioned, Gene Chizik has certainly proven his reliability in preparation on the big stage. Keep the comments coming they're greatly appreciated!

  • i would have to disagree with one of the replys to this post. Yes saban has played in probaly more bigger bowl games than chizik. But all the bowl games are based on each others records and trying to invite two teams in that makes an intrigueing match-up. Just like this year yes alabama was a great team im an auburn fan 1000 percent but alabama really had some great players just as we did last year. But also Auburn played a good Virginia team that looks to be on the up-rise and to me that was a good match up and we came out on top. Just because Saban has been in a few bigger bowls doesnt mean anything. A win is a win in a bowl game. Both are Great coaches. But what chizik has done for Auburn has been great not only for football but to support them in everything they do on and off the field. But his bowl record cannot be over looked. And just remember Bama has not been on top long. they have had some rough years in the early 2000s. Auburn has been competing in and out for years now and i definatly see that coming for years to come. So to me in that column id have to give Chizik the first place vote. But as i said Saban and Chizik both are Great coaches IMO.....
