So are we going to mostly a run offense?

  • I noticed that Temple only attempted 198 passes all year this season. Is that his style or was it lack of a QB? Anyone know?

    Pichelmayer

  • If that's the style it's going to be hard to bring in WRs........think tubberball.

  • They had the 6th best RB in the country and a top-10 rushing offense, I believe. So they likely didn't need to throw the ball, much.

Read that he was considered one of the best teaching the passing game. Seems to fit offense to personnel on hand.

Yes this is exactly what I don't want again. I like the balance we have now.

Bamako had the best RB in the country but still threw the ball more than that because you cant't win this league off the run alone.

That's definitely not his style. He is more well-known for his expertise in the passing game. They had two really good backs and, I suspect, a QB who didn't throw very well.

PM-This is where I'm confused I guess. I thought his big upside was his ability to coach QB's? I am still confused which isn't hard to do these days! ;)

Michelangelo did some amazing sculptures, but if you gave him flawed materials to work with, there's only so much he could do with it. The same holds true for QBs and their coaches. You can be the best QB coach ever, but there's only so much you can do with what's there.

  • I hope that we throw the ball more than we run the ball , but it would be nice to be able to run the clock out when we need to. I hope he goes with a little hurry up offense. maybe not what CGM wanted to do but not milk the clock everytime.

  • I read that he tailors his scheme to fit the personnel, not vice versa. Sounds good to me.

He had three different quaterbacks during the year at Temple and the one who started the last six games was a QB who could not participate in Spring ball because of a broken hand according to Coach Loeffler. The team passer efficiency rating for all three QBs was 142.8 with only four total interceptions. The offense overall averaged 383 yards per game and scored over 30 points per game. By comparison Auburn had three QBs two of whom were with the program in the Spring. All three had a cumulative passer efficency rating of 124.6 The offense averaged 338 yards per game and 25.7 points while throwing 13 interceptions. Given the level of competition was different, but also given the quality of the athlete was different, Temple performed better at its level on offense than Auburn and rushed for over 1,000 more than Auburn.
When you throw in his work with Tom Brady, Chad Hene and Brian Griese, it is clear he can develop talent for throwing, He gives, in my opinion, what Coach Chizik wanted. And that is a coach who can deliver a variety of offenses, knows how to rush the ball, knows how to score and knows how to take care of the football as well. This all appeals to a defensive coach, especially rushing for over 3300 yards.

  • I think it was due to exactly what he said he'll do here...adjust the style to the talent.

There is a lot that goes into the decision to pass or run. Look back at Malzahn's two years at Tulsa.

    2007:
    387 passing yards per game
    173 rushing yards per game

    2008:
    310 passing yards per game
    268 rushing yards per game.

In one year Malzahn increased his rushing total by almost 100 yards per game...which is a ton. I've heard him talk about it, and he noted that the o-line in 2007 simply wasn't good at run blocking, but could pass protect pretty well (those two skills are more different than you'd think). In 2008, he had a new quarterback....one that could run a little more, and a line that had become more physical. So they were capable of running the ball much, much better. They led the nation in total offense both years....doing it very differently from one year to the next.

In other words, don't mistake any one year of stats to represent a coaches "style".

Loeffler did at Temple exactly what I hope he'll do at Auburn....figure out the team's strength and then make them really, really good at it.

Some years you might see an offense that looks like Al Borges returned with his two-back set and quick passing game. The next year you might think Malzahn is back with the quarterback running the read-option frequently. That's the genius of the hire and what Chizik noted. He's been around a very diverse range of offenses, and he's seen them all run to perfection.

Borges and Petrino both put up big numbers on offense under Tuberville. I would be happy to return to that kind of production.
