Small World. Great War Eagle Moment.

  • I've had War Eagle shouted at me, all over the world. We have to stick together and ignor the Updykes, when they show their lack of class, as they often do.

This past July I attended the Auburn Football Fantasy Camp, and while riding back to the hotel in one of the university vans, I was telling Jim Lawson a story about my sister, Meredith Sutton (a 1981 AU grad). She had been to Wimbledon in England in June of this year and she passed a gentleman wearing an Auburn shirt and she cried out, "War Eagle." The man turned around and yelled, "War Eagle" in reply and then gave my sister a high-five. After telling Jim this story, he immediately turned to me with his eyes wide open and said, "That was me. I was the one who gave your sister a high-five." I then called my sister on my cell and asked her if she remembered the Auburn man at Wimbleton and she said "yes." I then told her "Well, I'm sitting right next to him." To make a long story short, my sister, who lives in Florida, is coming to the Auburn-Florida game and we all plan to get together (Jim, my sister, and I) to tailgate. Craig Martin DVM. AU 1991

Great story and I gave you an up vote. I have had that happen in Rome, Italy and on a cruise in Alaska. WDE

Now to my point. You might want to make some other plans with your sister for the Auburn - Florida game. We don't play FL this year. When the conference expanded FL was dropped of our schedule and we picked up Texas A&M. At least A&M will be a home game for us. Anyway hope your sister still comes to AU and meets up with you and your friend. WDE

  • I had been working in Alaska and while driving this past September from Denali National Park back to Anchorage , on a whim, we pulled off the Highway in the middle of nowhere Alaska to get a cup of coffee at one of these isolated 8'X8' drive thru Coffee huts. There was only one other vehicle there. A Chevrolet Suburban pulling a new Airstream trailer. When I got out and walked around it admiringly I noted an Auburn University decal in the back window. As I walked back around to the order window I was able to give and receive a large WAR EAGLE from the owner of the Airstream. Our talk quickly turned to the Auburn Clemson game of that day. She noted she had been worried and was about to call her Dad to find out who won. Since I had just called my wife on my cell, I had to give her the bad news of the end of our win streak. Only in the Auburn world will you be unexpectedly compelled to stop literally in the middle of nowhere and then find yourself exchanging War Eagles followed by a serious talk on Auburn football .

  • Very Nice.....

80% of the time when I'm traveling and see someone with Auburn apparel on, I yell War Eagle and they just look at me crazy. I'm sure they realize what I'm saying later but it sure does ruin "The Special Moment"....Hehe.

  • A little different experience.

I was at the '05 Jawja game in Athens, as I was walking to the stadium with some leg humper friends I heard a lady shout "War Eagle". Before I found the person who said it I shouted back "War Eagle". When I looked around I realized everyone around me was family. I'm so used to being the only AU person in a crowd that I didn't realize she was talking to someone she was meeting up with at the game.

I almost always have AU stuff on when I travel and 90% of the time I give and receive War Eagles from people everywhere I go (Mexico, Jamaica, British Virgin Islands etc.) I get some surprised looks usually followed by a War Eagle and conversation about Auburn.

Best Thread in a long time.

  • I love these War Eagle moments. My Dad was a car dealer and I would work for him when I was home each summer from Auburn. One hot afternoon I greeted a young newlywed couple. I was only 19 or 20 myself. The wife was very nice, but the husband was rude and very hard to deal with. She found a car she really liked and we went inside to see if we could agree on a deal. I left them in my office while I went and had their car they wanted to trade appraised. As I was walking around their car I noticed an AU sticker on the back window. When I went back in the office I looked the husband and said War Eagle. He looked at me kind of puzzled and asked if I went to AU. I told him I was going now just off for the summer working for my Dad. It was like he had found his best friend. They bought the car and the three of us became friends for many years. It was really my first realization of the power of those two words...WAR EAGLE!!

  • This past July I was in San Francisco after honeymooning in Sonoma. I was walking with my wife down to the Wharf area and ran right into three older gentlemen, one wearing an Auburn hat. I nodded and said War Eagle. He smilled, poked me with his umbrella, and gave me a War Eagle right back. My wife went to a small college in New Orleans, and didn't get it all at first. Now, she loves it and embraces it. Hell, now she wants to live around Auburn. Haha...
