  • Brian, you mention that the receivers and defensive lineman have not developed at an acceptable rate despite recruiting very talented players. There are at least two elements in development that are critical: 1) the individual players skills / desire to perform; and 2) the coaches ability to develop the players to perform at very high level. If we have one or two at a position who are not developing I can see maybe there was a recruiting miss, but when the whole group does not perform you have to look at the coaching. I just don't see where Coach Taylor and Coach Pelton are getting the job done. Question for you is do you feel this is more of a coaching issue or more of a recruiting bust issue?

I think there are some player development issues on this team including the WR and DL positions. I also think there are some other issues not related to recruiting or player development that are keeping this team from reaching its potential. I don't have any details on that right now but I think if you watch this team regularly, their lack of mental and physical toughness, and their lack of leadership is pretty evident.

  • I will say again, you do not know on signing day how good that class is. We are just now learning about the quality of the 2010 signing class. Minus Cam Newton and dyer it's not a top ten class based on what it is doing right now. Another year or two will tell about the 2011 and 2012 classes.

The defensive line is a major problem. We were given a lot of message board assurances that they were very deep and possibly the best defensive line in the nation. That is hardly the case. They may be deep in the sense of there being a lot of bodies at that position. They are very "thin" in terms of how those bodies are performing. Were they poorly evaluated or are they being poorly coached? I have my opinion and I'll tell you how to fix it. Go out and see what it would take to bring back Don Dunn. Let him have that line tomorrow and one year from today they will one bunch of mean s.o.b.'s. They will not be getting pushed around and they will be feared.

  • Anyone who reads that and has a football understanding ought to see why CGC is struggling. Our talent is all underclassmen, things could be very bright in the future. one thing you have to ask yourself is if a whole new staff is brought in how many is going to transfer. Most of these kids love the coaches. As bad as it may be i would like to see Chizik with one team that isn't loaded with a bunch of underclassmen. You can coach them up but as you know if you have a job there is no substitution for experience and our team lacks it badly. i will say this you put Cam on this Team and we wouldn't compete for the SEC championship. Our o-line is what made his year so special and Chizik navigated the turmoil that year as good as anyone could. If he doesn't completely lose the team which i think he hasn't, and you can disagree all you want, but we're just some good QB leadership and play from having a better record. If a change is made it needs to be CBVG so he can hold the team together but hopefully it doesn't come to that this year. Even if you bring in another staff next year will be bad also, that's the history of coaching and it hasn't changed unless they catch lightning in a bottle like T. Bowden did. Even Saban had bad years at every program he went to his first year.

  • Bryan now in 2009 and 2010 when our receivers were running all over the place, nobody was complaining about Coach Trooper, and they were bringing in highly rated he was better than buttered toast. But I agree with you to loose Kitchens (big, strong receiver) and Goodwin (the speed threat) hurt. Would love to see Reed develope but he doesn't look like a player that likes the weight room and Benton (body pretty much looks the same from his freshman year) so maybe that haven't put in the work to be successful. But to throw Trooper under thd bus, not good for team chemistry or recruiting. And when fans complain about how Trooper wears his hat during interview, (and for the 4 years he has been here it was a problem till now) or to him stepping between the HC and player during a game. Why, now when we were winning and he would do it, fans said way to diffuse the situation Trooper. Now he can't do anything right. As for the DL it looks like a strength issue and not that they didn't do the work but not having that year to lift and redshirt has hurt all. But the growth that was expected this year happens for all the defenders that played to early in their freshman year dl, lb (Holland). But great reads all BM

  • I totally agree w/ lack of leadership. I feel that's our biggest issue when talking about 4th qtr problems. Not necessarily vocal leaders, seems like we have plenty of vocal guys, but guys to step up in the 4th qtr & make a big time play in big time situations we are lacking. Even the top seniors such as Blake who has fumbled, lutz who has missed several blocks, etc...no one is stepping up to provide that spark. A lot of that is coaching, not getting mason the ball etc...I also feel that our biggest issue we have right now is QB play. In 09 we had a solid team, not great but solid, & that was w Chris Todd who wasn't an all SEC QB but he managed the games well & did not turn the ball over a lot. U can make up for deficiencies in a lot of areas on a football team, but poor QB you can not. That's where it at all starts, defense or offense everything starts & feeds off of QB play & until that improves for us we will continue to struggle.

  • Thanks, Bryan. So you are saying that due to all the attrition, Auburn has less talent than LA Monroe, Ole Miss, and Miss State? It seems to me that every player who played last year has gotten worse. It very much appears to me that if Auburn had swapped coaching staffs with any team it has played this year it may be undefeated. It didn't start this year. Everybody remembers almost losing to Utah St in the first game last year. Auburn is a disaster in football, basketball, and baseball. But Auburn is still family. However, the family is looking more like the Kardasians than the Waltons.

  • BM - With all due respect I take exception to the "Auburn's been recruiting against the big boy schools the past few years." statement. We are a big boy school and shouldn't take a back seat to anyone. What are your criteria for being a "big boy school"?
