Calling Fisher a mediocre hire is certainly debatable. I don't know of anyone who would call Fisher an elite coach though. Currently, he would fall somewhere in the 6th-8th range in the SEC among coaches. Its going to be hard to compete for championships when you're middle of the pack.
There are plenty of coaches that could be considered elite at the college and pro level that may be interested in the Auburn job if the price is right. Difficult? Sure, its always going to be difficult if being elite is your goal.
Being good every now and then is easy. Auburn tends to take the easy way out when it comes to hiring football coaches.
