Scarbinsky's column about Mike Dyer

  • I believe Kevin Scarbinsky hit some nails on their head in his column in today's BHM News. Have you read it?

    http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2012/04/more_evidence_that_auburn_is_b.html

I concur with Scarbinsky's assessment that Dyer probably should have been dismissed even before last season's bowl game.

I don't want to judge Coach Chizik about his handling of the situation, or to try and say when he knew about Dyer's drug abuse, because I don't know all the facts and I haven't heard any more than what's been in the media.

But, I do question the judgment of Coach Malzahn to allow Dyer to join his Arkansas State team… and to stay... especially after Dyer's testimony in court last week.

Malzahn was the head, or coordinator, of the offensive team at Auburn. He knew before he was hired at Arkansas State of the abusive drug problems… if not before the robbery, at least right after the arrest of the four Auburn players who participated.

They not only committed armed robbery, but used Dyer's gun as one of the two weapons involved. Dyer himself, in my opinion, should have been arrested for aiding and abetting the four drug-inspired robbers, for having a firearm under age, and also for using an illegal drug… at least for the time it was deemed illegal. He confessed these things in open court!

Yes… I believe Malzahn has definitely shown poor judgment in allowing Dyer to be on his team and to play in their Spring game. Dyer not only embarrassed Auburn, but his current team as well… and that's two hits at Malzahn! And, it will come home to roost when other teammates think they can also have their sins overlooked… "So, let's go 'hit a lick!' "

Teammates and coaches must step forward and show 'tough love'... tough discipline... in a 'timely' manner to these kind of players, or they will continue to their own destruction, as well as the team's!

I would like to hear your opinions about the problem of drug abuse, and if 5 or 4 Star athletes should be given such leeway as Dyer has received at AU and at Arkansas State.

This whole situation is very disturbing to me....

If he was in any way involved int eh robbery FOURSOME... he should have been let go. PERIOD... This is WAY WORSE than the Cam stuff so I dont really know what Chiz actually knew...

As far as GM goes...Very dissapoiinted to say the least. I thought he had more "balls" than that move.

  • Well Scab certainly makes some points that folks who post on here are not going to want to hear. Did Gus take him with him, so soon after his being suspended at Auburn, because he thought he could help him turn things around or because he needed an all-American type of running back? Only time will tell. I hope the reason is the former. I do appreciate a couple of things here. 1. Coach Chizik finally said "enough is enough" so far as michael dyer is concerned. 2. He got rid of the other four as soon as he learned of their crime. I believe everyone needs to keep those two things in mind before pointing any fingers his way.

  • I don't agree with the statements that Auburn is not less talented at running back, other than the loss of Dyer's experience. We have a stable of VERY talented running backs. It may take a committee to equal Dyer's production this season, since McCalebb can't get as many carries. However, from what I have seen and heard about Mason, Blakely and Grant (AND the freshmen coming in this summer), I think Auburn's backfield is plenty talented.

By the way, I was just looking at the spring roster and saw a running back named Chico Canady. I have never heard of him before. Does anyone know who he is?

Chico is a walk-on who just earned his spot coming in this spring. He is from Notasulga but played with Corey Grant at Opelika High School.

  • I read Kevin's column and overall I think his work is okay--but he doesn't need to pass judgment on Malzahn just yet.

Dyer needed to be shown the door at Auburn. It's sad, but true.

But kids sometimes need second chances. I think Cam Newton was thrilled to get another opportunity outside of Gainesville and while whatever he did at Florida probably doesn't equal Dyer's situation--a second chance changed his life forever.

It's just my gut, but I think Malzahn is the type of guy who cares about his kids. I'm thinking it's more than just winning games for him; I think he believes he can help Dyer.

    Here's hoping he does.
