They couldn't have hired a more prominent and more highly regarded guy than Barbee. Barbee is in the third year of a seven-year contract. Maybe it will work and maybe not, but he's not going to be fired this year. Blaming the AD for every loss is truly silly. Four teams are 2-5 in the SEC, three more 3-4. Firing somebody is not always the answer. It usually isn't the answer.

Rermember Barbee has just two years experience and is not hiding behind a bunch of lame excuses for Auburn's miserable showing in he last few games.
He knows where the weaknesses are and will spend all the time the NCAA allows to correct them, and I'm not sure what else he can do.
Recruiting talent isn't a one way street that leads to success. The guys have to be leaning to Auburn, or they'll go somewhere else.
It's pretty easy to criticize when you're on the outside with no responsibility . It's hard to be on the inside with all the responsibility and not be able to go in he directions you know full well you must to succeed.
Phillip Marshall is a level headed writer on the Auburn scene, and if he says Barbee is not on a hot seat, I believe him, and think that some pretty high up in the scheme of things are watching and not displeased with the coaches efforts to give us a program that tickles instead of one that leaves rashes.
If you've never been cnarged with responsibility to make something sick into a roaring success, something that has no record of how to go forward, with a buinch of whiners helping you to fail, you've missed one of lifes fine experiences.

Barbee was my pick during the coaching search. I'm not ready to dismiss him yet. It takes time to come back from where he started. As for Jacobs, at least he has Auburn in good financial shape. That is, as far as we know. I would like to see an in-depth article comparing the finances of all the SEC schools. Auburn seems to have plenty of money to spend, but I'll bet the Tennessee supporters were shocked to hear that they were $200 million in the hole. There is a little more to being an AD than just hiring coaches. I wonder about all the big spending. Is the new "athletic dorm" ( we can't really call it that) financed by the athletic department or out of the university's capital improvements fund? I have a feeling that these big time programs do a lot of shifting and shuffling of funds. Who really knows the finances of these schools?
