SEC dominance drives talk of college football playoff

  • David Moulton: SEC dominance drives talk of college football playoff » Naples Daily News

A consensus seems to be building, finally, in college football that more is needed.

  • Thanks for the link Ron. I'm not really sure how SEC dominance is the catalyst here though, or at least it needs to be clarified. Because unless you go with the ridiculous 8-team playoff with all conf winners--proposed by ASU, then you could end up with many more years with two SEC teams playing in the title game. With the current system, I think pollsters will in the future just not vote two SEC teams back into the title game.

What I think may hold some water is that the two BIG Whatevers and PAC least are concerned that their teams aren't consistently in the title game and all the cash that goes with it. They want a consistent piece of the pie. So, their solution is now to expand the pie.

  • Thnx Ron. The main thing I haven't heard that he mentioned is the home playoffs. I can see how an SEC power could struggle mightily in a December snowstorm, or any of the wintry conditions that go with it. Mr EGO, Jim Delooney will presumably be all over this! The SEC would adapt to this over time, but it could be a stumbling block far a while. Ironically, those very conditions are the downfall of the schools in the Big 10 and elsewhere in the North. I say let em set it up however they wish, and we will still find a way to dominate the majority of the time.

  • I think some of these high flying acts in the Big12 and PAC10 would have a much harder time with it than the power teams that have come out of the SEC in the last few years: Bama, LSU, us and UF all had power running attacks that would have been fine in cold weather. I honestly don't think it would be much of a factor. The home field advantage is the biggie. It is hard to win at Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Oregon regardless, and that would be the big advantage IMO. But rightfully so, if you're the higher ranked team.

What would be interesting is that it seems in past years, some big name program would have had to travel to BSU (although I haven't check pre-bowl game polls to see if accurate). That might be difficult, particularly on short notice. The "blue" field advantage.

  • The idea that a big ten team would be better in the snow is just as stupid as saying an sec team is better in the sunshine. Both teams play on the same field. The home field advantage has nothing to do with weather.
