SEC Should Follow Big Ten Lead, No Longer Schedule FCS Opponents

  • SEC Should Follow Big Ten Lead, No Longer Schedule FCS Opponents

I would totally agree with this. Maybe schedule just one for Homecoming, but you can find enough D1 schools in the lower tier of the 120 to fill everyone's schedule.

  • I would favor limiting the number in a season but not eliminating them since I also remember that quite a few of those FCS schools schedule those games to get the big payday that such a game represents for them.

  • The B1G is an FCS level conference already right?

When some league has to play the level of opponent week in week out as the SEC then they can talk about the SEC needing to beef up its OOC schedule.

    I totally agree.

It seems Josh Sanchez (the guy who wrote the article) has never read Proverbs 17:28:

"Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise:and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding."

The SEC might have what he refers to as "the weakest non-conference schedule." Maybe he should have realized we get all the quality games we need in conference.

Performance stands out like a ton of diamonds. Nonperformance can always be explained away.

  • I don't think it's fair to the FCS schools, who count on those games against BCS schools to pay the bills. Without them, many would have to give up football. I don't think the B1G even considers that - all they care about is trying to one-up the SEC so they can shout and point and say they're somehow 'better'! I would like to think the FCS schools, which after all have a vote in the NCAA, would stop this nonsense and tell the B1G to keep their little ideas to themselves, and let them have all the MAC games they want, and leave the rest of the schools alone to schedule whom they want. If the selection committee uses 'strength of schedule' as a criteria, then the other big schools will schedule accordingly, not because the B1G 'told' them they 'needed' to stop scheduling FCS schools. It really makes me mad to think that they can tell the SEC anything - let them do their talking on the field!! Reminds me of someone else in D.C. who wants to tell everyone else what to do, but don't do it themselves! Wow! Wonder where the B1G is getting it's chutzpah from? When they win 7 BCS titles in a row, then maybe someone will listen to them. Otherwise - shut up!! WDE!!

  • It has been my opinion for a while now that Auburn should not schedule FCS schools. If we want to help one or several of those schools financially, just send them a check. If the rest of the league wants to follow, great for them. As another has said, there are many schools at the top level that would not match up physically with Auburn. I would much rather play UAB or Idaho than App St.

I don't know Pommostaclenes, those guys are just going to get blown out the same way Ga. Southern or South Alabama would. All it does is pass the eye test with no real substance to it. The amount of operating expenses that they make in one game is massive. Without it you wouldn't have the South Florida's or Marshall's of the world being able to one day jump to the next level. Surely it wouldn't stop them from doing it but I would think that it would make it tremendously difficult. It's either that or have teams like Troy who dupe the state into helping them pay for enough upgrades to jump levels. Sorry I couldn't help myself...hehe.

I used to be on your bandwagon until I saw what it did for those schools. Plus even with those games the SEC's schedule is so difficult that we are still putting 2 teams in the big game at the same time. The SEC teams can lose one game even 2 games and still get in over worthy teams that lose equal or less than us. Thats with an FCS opponent on the schedule. Kicking the piss outta Wyoming instead of Alcorn St. Isn't gonna make one bit of difference. Except to the eye. The only time I've seen it hurt is 2004. That was only because Oklahoma STOLE Auburn's original opponent and Auburn had to scramble around and find someone to play the summer before the season. Fluke.... My point is that it isn't going to make for more competitive games like Barry or the writer alluded too. That is unless they schedule opponents that truly give them a more competitive game and New Mexico St. Isn't the answer.

  • @Para: That's why I would advocate cutting a pet program a check. There is no reason why a little of the wealth can't be shared. I just don't see the need to have that level of athlete be subjected to being pounded on by what athletes become at the top level. Facing the D-1 kids in HS is bad enough. Facing them 40 pounds later isn't appealing to me.

South actually plays in the Sunbelt. That kinda surprised me a bit since they didn't even have a team not too long ago. Also surprising for a state the size of Alabama, is having five FBS teams, four FCS teams and five Division II teams within our borders.

This works out to (using 2012 population estimates) one FBS team for every 964,405 people, one Division I team for 535,780 people and one Division I or II team for every 344,430 people. By comparison, the state with the most FBS teams, Texas has 2,171,600 people for each FBS school. I might be wrong, but I believe this points to a concentration of football talent (and the ability to attract it from elsewhere) not seen anywhere else.
