Reality Check after KY game

  • I know some will yell from the hills that our D "has to change"... but I contend:

This game witnessed some of the worst officiating I've seen in a long long time. I saw calls that extended drives and put Kentucky in the redzone that would not have been called in a po-dunk Texas HS homecoming.

I saw pass interference, late hit, ruffing the passer... I saw a complete lack of holding and I saw a complete lack of pass interference in our favor.

I saw Cam throw an arrogant INT, and then I saw Chizik put his finger into the Gus Bus and slow it down.

I then saw an inspired KY team who would not give up try to come back and do what they'd promised each other they'd do all week.

But in the end I saw a team overcome bad officiating, missed plays and mistakes, poor coaching decisions, and a hostile home crowd to do what they've learned to do - WIN.

Our Tigers are good enough to beat anyone in the nation. They're also close enough to lose at least four more of our remaining games.

But I tell you what - after seeing the kind of gamers they are now... I like our chances.

Ted Roof - I like his plan, I think it was solid.... No scheme can account for missing tackles and poor coverage.

No scheme can account for not bringing a kid down when he's ten yards deep and letting him scramble to the 1 yard line.

War Damn Eage - we're 6-0 and the team WE BEAT just took down the number one team in the nation by two TD's...

Get on board now - because these guys are doing something special.

    As a side note:
Alabama and AU are going to get every teams best shot. Alabama because of who they are, AU because everyone thinks they can win against us and make a statement.

  • Great post GNC . . .

A couple of observations on the offense . . .

We really suffered after Dyer's fumble. We tried to stick with the game plan using Fannin, but it's just not the same. Dyer's north-south mentality adds a KEY component to this offense. 2 things learned here: 1. We're going to have to keep Dyer on the field, fumbles or not, and 2. We need to recruit more RB's like MD.

In my mind, the most important lesson from KY is one that might be missed, i.e. FUMBLES. I think we left the ball on the ground at least 4 times, maybe more. We didn't lose any of them, so it's easy to overlook the issue. I hope and assume that there will be MUCH time spent on ball protection this week.

Finally, I'll say the obvious, Cam Newton is incredible. Everyone who bleeds orange and blue should take the time to comprehend and appreciate what that kid is doing. Against KY, he took the team on his shoulders (vertigo comes to mind) and almost literally carried them to victory. I don't know that I can think of a performance by a single individual in my 40+ years watching AU football that compares. And he's still learning and getting better.

  • My reality-check: (1) our defense is better than last year, and (2) we held the SEC's 2nd best passing offense below its yards-per-game average. While I would love to see the dominating defenses that we all crave (and have seen in the past), I like this team and am very proud of them. War Eagle!

  • never blame a game or it's outcome on officiating.. that is what Bama fans do... I can't stand that.. if you play as well as you should a blown call here or there will not affect the outcome of the game in 90 percent of games... it was a great win on the road.. good Auburn turnout... yeah the D has problems but they have since last year.. it can only be changed by the HC... WAR EAGLE!!!!

  • How many yards did UK have? I think we held them below their average. They had a short field all night.

  • We need to understand that KY and others know our DL is pretty strong against the run so they are all throwing the underneath route to backs or a dragging WR as a modified run...getting the ball to their play makers behind our DL and agianst LB who have dropped in coverage. That is where most of the completions and yardage was gained last night and we can and better make adjustments because we will continue to see it until we stop it defensively.

As for the 3 bad calls (Zac and Fairly), those were terrible judgment calls by 3 inexperienced officials who didnt see the whole play- a must if you are going to call either of them. But, we overcame them and they wont be the last bad calls we have to deal with, not because of any conspiracy, but because they sometimes happen.

Give our guys kudos and credit for playing with great heart and effort and completing a record setting and amazing final drive that totally controlled the end of the game and left KY completely helpless to do anything but watch their slow agonizing defeat play out like a slow bleed-out.

We are 6-0 and play 2 of our 3 toughest remaining games in JH, beginning with this Saturday afternoon on national tv- so lets get that place rockin' and make sure we give the team the strongest home field advantage. WE have to give the hogs a real JH welcome and show the national audience we are a real contender.

    WDE!!!
