QB transition from spread to pro-style scheme

  • Kheil played in a spread offense since the 9th grade. He is clearly struggling to transition to the pro-style. Denard Robinson seems to be having similar issues. Tim Tebow very much struggled (and still does). My question is, are there QBs that have demonstrated the ability to go from spread to pro and still be successful. I guess I'm wondering, are the chances high that Kheil will eventually make the transition and be good at it or is it always going to be a bit of a misfit for him? If the chances are low, would it make sense for Loeffler to run a more spread oriented offense until we have the right players in place? I just hope we aren't going to be having the same issues and same explanations for those issues at year's end. At some point it seems like it makes more sense to fit the offense around the personnel as opposed to fitting the personnel around the offense. Right now, we seem to be doing the latter. I was just curious if there are good examples of other programs who have done what AU is doing. Recruit for the spread (namely at the QB position), change scheme to pro-style with those same players and be successful.

Are you assuming that because KF had success playing in a spread offense in high school that he would have success playing in a spread offense in college? I can see why one would assume that, but it is not a given.

  • Texas would be one to look at..........they are one year ahead of us in the change. David Ash looks like a different player this year. Now, they have not played anybody to this point, but, I liked what I saw out of them in Oxford. We'll know more after they face OSU this week.

I don't disagree at all. Good point and one I should have clarified. I guess it's just fair to say that he is defintely struggling in the pro-style. If we assume he has good QB skills, is making the transition to the pro-style during his sophomore season in college practical? Just would like to hear examples of when it's been done with successful qbs in the past. I just hope we aren't forcing a square peg in a round hole.

  • Denard Robinson is now running more of a pro style and is a senior and see what happend to them. If you would of ask me before the start of the season would i take a bad year to go a pro style offence i would have said yes. Now did i think we would be better than we are yes,but i trust in Chiz and the staff and i love the direction were going.WDE

  • Here is a possibility to consider. Frazier is a very gifted athlete with a very strong arm. he is struggling at the moment but as soon as he settles down and masters this offense he will be outstanding. I think that is a very distinct possibility. There is a big difference between Frazier and Tebow. Tebow, evidently, was never taught proper mechanics. I believe that Frazier will be a much better passer than tebow ever will be.

  • I think Kiehl is being over coached. When he sees the chance roll out and extend the play he should. When the play breaks down and he sees a lane he should run. Let him play his game!! Just like Cam.. He's not Tom Brady.

Let me clarify. You trust Loefler and like the direction our offense is going? Gotta love your optimism.

Can you tell me of a team that changed from spread to pro style that did not have growing pains?
