The bench press is more of a measure of how willing a player has been to spend time and effort in the weight room. The actual bench press is seldom used in an NFL game. As a matter of fact, I don't know that I have ever seen one. The nearest thing would be an offensive lineman pass blocking. Bench presses are only good for filling out a form fitting UnderArmour shirt. Maybe that is important in the NFL.

Well, whether or not it's fair is really irrelevant. What matters is that NFL does take a lot of stock into the bench press. Therefore, somebody who is the program for four years of weight training should be able to do more than 225lbs for 4 repetitions. The Combine is for those who haven't really been heavy on pro-scouts radar. It's not as big of a deal for the stars though great stats at the Combine don't hurt them either. Pro-Days are supposed to be these kids' showcase. They should be highly successful for a Pro-Day but 4 repetitions on the bench press is not highly successful if the NFL scouts really value such an exercise. Obviously, those scouts really do hold it as important therefore are strength and conditioning program should as well. I don't care who likes it and who does not want to do it. That may have cost Thorpe millions.
