#PMARSHONAU: Will AU stars shine?

Will Auburn's star recruits shine for first-year head coach Gus Malzahn?

  • Looking down these lists, two things seem to stand out - lack of discipline as well as lack of physical conditioning. Injuries and dismissals were the norm. Also, there are several very talented players that seemed to not get the playing time they needed to mature into the SEC style of play - ie, Frost, Grant, Blakely, etc. I believe each will have perfect uses for their abilities in the new style of play and will shine, Frost at "Talon" seems like a perfect fit. Grant, Blakely and Coates in the "Gus Bus" offense - well, just watch out. There are others not to mention great and talented depth from the redshirts - especially on the OL. Need to add some defensive depth, but our recruitung class could add this if kept together. I like our chances!! WDE

  • I forgot about some of these redshirts. This team is loaded for the new coaches. I think they have plenty to work with to win consistently with Gus's system. He's used to winning with less for sure!

  • Hey Phillip,

Thanks for the review of the past signing classes. One question - I know we lost 4 players off the 2012 signing class right from the beginning
    Williams - did not qualify
Pike - sent home, transferred to Louisville
    Robinson - academic fraud

Wasn't the other one Hutcherson (3 star) who also didn't make his grades? I know Williams has committed to tamu; I've read from others on this board several different things about Robinson and Hutcherson. To your knowledge what are the chances that either one of them ever enrolls at AU?

Also, I've heard that the Williams situation may not be over, yet, either. Is CGM working to meet/talk with him? Is he planning to enroll early at tamu? Of course that would interject a totally different timetable into the equation since, if he's planning to sign before the end of Dec and enroll at tamu in Jan, it's seems like it's too late, but if he's going to sign in Feb we might still have a chance. While we're on the subject, do we have any commitments planning to sign in Dec who would then count against our 2012 class?

Thanks again. I'll hang up and listen!

OT Shon Coleman: Diagnosed with cancer during his senior year in high school. Cancer-free, he played for the first time this season.

I kept watching for Coleman to get in for a few plays this year but I never noticed him getting a chance to play. Which game did he get in and which position did he play?

  • Every time I look at this list or think about it before PM compiled the list for us I wonder what could have been going on for AU to be so pitiful on the field. I do not want to freak anyone out...least of all myself...but this team has all the makings of yet another team that goes on to make a NC run in a coach's second year. I cannot explain the phenomenon, but, many programs have their greatest success in a HC's second year. The talent in there and if we hold this class together some big holes will be filed. We have the system. It is going to be a fun ride.

  • Great post! Lot of talent gone but still a lot still here. Looks like we have a great nucleus of talent. Time for coach Russell to start earning his pay and get the players ready for 2013.

  • How many spots do we have for the 2013 class-- both for early enrolles that can count back to the 2012 class and ones that count against the 2013 class?

I agree with this. It seems like the phenomenon (IMO) was the complete and total lack of coaching, mental toughness and dissention. It all starts at the the top. Chizik was in over his head. WAY over his head. The security teams sitting outside players apartments, knocking on their doors... that blew my mind when I read that... Wayne Bolt getting thrown out of a meeting by BVG. There was just too much dissention on the plains... I hope Gussy and Ellis can get these guys prepared physically and mentally. The talent is there. The talent is almost ridiculous! The fall we took was truely surreal over the past 2 years. It was like a bad dream.... It all goes back to coaching though. We'll see what Gus is made of. Like TrojanTiger said, cautious optimism here.

  • Boy Chizik really screwed this up. He really had a chance to do something special. Just looking at all the wasted talent blows my mind and even more talent that sat on the sidelines "injured" because of poor conditioning. I was really hoping he was going to turn it around but I've never seen an Auburn team act like a bunch of pathetic losers. They had no intensity, rarely if ever hit anyone hard on defense, made the same mistakes over and over, and moped on the sidelines when they losing (which was all season). I think what made me the most upset was how they played against the sisters of the poor. They laid it on those teams when they could and bounced around, with all kinds of energy as if they were doing something impressive....it made me sick to my stocmach. Hopefully Gus will get these kids' minds right and get them in the training room and back up to SEC snuff. Thats my biggest concern with him right now, is he going to change to culture to make these kids warriors.
