#PMARSHONAU: Turnaround will start up front

Nobody is throwing him under the bus, and we've done our best to report the truth about last year.

Not quite. Both coordinators were tasked with bringing in new systems and given very few opportunities to bring in staffs with a backgrond that would get the coordinators point across without having to step aside while the coordinator did the coaches job.

  • "You're not buying it"? Then, with all due respect, you are choosing to turn a blind eye to what everybody else sees. If a player says there is a lack of talent, I trust his judgment, especially when what he says reveals itself on the playing field. A former player told me that we had a lack of talent. Again, with all due respect, guys who play and played on that team know much more than any of us but the record seems to agree with them. The antithesis, if these players are in fact wrong, is then that the same coaches who were part of a national championship team were so bad that you wouldn't even want them coaching your local pee-wee league. Possible? Yes. Likely? No.

I don't think everybody else sees that. I know for certain a lot of people very close, closer than you or I, don't see that. I know lots of players who don't see it that way. Lots of players with talent never become great or even good players. Sometimes it's coaching. Sometimes it's because they just can't adjust to the demands of college football. Sometimes things don't click with coaches. It doesn't mean they don't have talent. As I said talent and performance aren't the same. I don't know anyone close to Auburn football who believes they were so lacking in talent that it made sense they could not even compete the second half of the season. I've seen Auburn football teams with less talent compared to their competition than last season, and I've never seen one that couldn't even compete.

  • Not that it really matters, but I agree with you on the talent in both lines and I hope we are right. Because it does start and hopefully doesn't end there offensively, while we hope it does start and end there defensively. I have never thought players, except perhaps professionals, are the best judges of talent. As for the scheduling situation for any sport, not just baseball, I have always tried to schedule weaker teams initially moving toward a non-conference toughie before conference. It is hard not to have some swagger when you are 13-3. And, I found it is particularly good for a young or younger team. On the other hand, I coached with and played for a guy who won over 1400 games in DIII and he played the best he could at any level and his success is obvious. He also won multiple national titles. So it will be interesting to see how this works out for Auburn.

We'll see, but I think it's risky to go into the SEC baseball season without having played any SEC-level competition. Arizona was supposed to come to Plainsman Park for a three-game series and Pawlowski canceled it. If they would have just played that series, I think it would have been fine. The other problem is that it's going to be a real problem if Auburn ends up a bubble team.

Yes, we know that quarterbacks often are unable to lead because their line lets them get smeared before they can get set. But Coach Grimes can't teach blocking assignments and techniques if the men turned over to him next fall are not prepared to play with strength and conditioning to last the game. I hated to watch third and two sink to forth and ten, and the weight room is where that changes. Recruiting is great but the won versus lost record isn't going to be imporved next fall by some jiogh school athlete that may go to UGA and if he doesn't, won't arrive on campus until August --14. How are we coming in the business of turning fat into muscle, muscle into weight, and finding a gain in quickness while that good stuff is going on?

A lot of truth here, but I also agree with what Grimes said about his O lineman running. He wants them running a LOT more!! I got so tired of watching guys take a couple of steps and lean/push their assignment, on BOTH sides of the ball. Our DT's were really bad about not keeping their feet moving ... dead in the water at that point, and it is not a talent issue! From Grimes statements on conditioning, I believe this will be corrected. I also believe the change will pay HUGE dividends quickly!wedance

  • I shake my head when I read about hopes of a 3 game improvement next year and the year following. Either I drink too much Kool Aid or others have Auburn confused with UAB... We'll see, I guess.
