#PMARSHONAU: Tough times for good people

  • Great article, its kind of like the business world where your company gets sold or goes bankrupt despite certain people working their butts off and bringing a great attitude to work each day. I have been on the buy side and sold side each a few times over the past 20 years and both are tough. But there is one huge difference for those coaches and its the job performance and approval ratings are hanging out for millions to see 12 to 14 times per year.

  • Great Article Phillip-You have a done a phenomenal job throughout this process. I saw the questions to you about TT, but the assistant I have been very impressed with is Boulware-Any speculation if he will ask for a chance to join new staff and will it be a possibility?

Phillip, while there is a human side to this business we often do not see, it is there. I am astounded at the "fall" Auburn experienced at the hands of this crew. To witness it was surreal, to watch it horrifying, but to be part of it just had to be depressing. It astounds me that all these good men could do nothing to turn it. It is almost like they were witnesses of it and not the cause. Well, I am one that says " you made this bed, so lay in it". Let's not pretend they did their jobs. This was the most unprepared team in our history. It was not the doing of one coach. All these fine men you speak of were very much a part, perhaps even the cause, of this disaster. Like them, love them, but let's not absolve them. They own this.

I would hope that the venom would stop and stop soon. As we've all heard, "one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch." I don't know and you don't know who or what that "one bad apple" was but most, if not all, of these coaches did "their" job and perhaps did it very well. They all worked hard and for some reason, it didn't work out. Many of them helped us win our NC in 2010, just like CGC. Enough venom, they did do some great things for AU and I thank them and wish them the best. I would even like to see some of them hired by CGM. Time will tell but Good Luck to all.

  • Phillip,
You do a remarkable job of keeping things in perspective. Even though each of these men did their best this year, it wasn't good enough. They feel worse than any of us about what happened this season and I feel for them and for their families. As for the many people going through hard times at this most joyous season, I will pray for them.
    Thanks for all you do.

  • Good post, PM. I am very thankful for these folks, and hope they will all be able to find their next place quickly. I also hope none of them leave feeling like they have failed. I don't believe they were given the best environment to succeed.

Hopefully, they can find places that will show their skills at their highest levels. Thanks to all of them for their hard work!

  • This article hits on many of the feelings I've had the last few days. There are a few coaches I'd like to see remain, but I really don't feel like I'm in a position to judge if they'd be good for Auburn football going forward. I guess I'll just sit back and see how all this plays out. No bowl game for us, but plenty for Auburn fans to talk about and watch.

  • Glad to see my good friend, Scott Fountain, staying with the program. There's not a finer individual from a finer family out there. He and his brothers - legendary high school coach Hugh Fountain and Jason Fountain - are fine men of character and have been successul wherever they have been. I think it also speaks volumes to the integrity of our recruiting and confidence in our innocence in any NCAA matters that CGM is retaining Scott.

  • Phillip, Coach Yox doesn't seem to be mentioned. Was he let go too? I assume he was. I hope he gets a chance to return. He had a long and storied reputation before our recent issues. It would be a real shame to lose a guy like that.

  • Great article, Phillip!

I just want to point out a couple of things... It's easy to focus on the salaries the assistants make and say everything is ok. Just remember that a lot of those coaches paid their dues at the high school level and smaller colleges before they got an opportunity to make the big bucks. When my wife and I got married I was still finishing my bachelor's and she had her bachelor's and worked as a teacher and completed two master's degrees -- all from Auburn. At that time we were at or below what was considered the poverty line. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't remember what it was like to be poor. It is easy for people to think someone "has it made" but most people like that didn't start out "having it made." And these coaches are asked to spend a lot of time away from their families to be out on the road recruiting, breaking down film, overseeing players, etc. I'm not defending that at all because that is the life they chose. I just think a lot of people see the $$$ and don't think what responsibility comes with it.

Final comment is this... I have learned in life making money is not the real problem. Managing money is the problem. If you can't manage money when you have a little, you damn sure can't manage it when you have a lot. It's not about what you make, it's about what you keep.

  • Its part of the business they are in, for sure. I hate it for those guys and hope they do well next year and beyond.

The one coach that I'm not feeling much sympathy for is Chizik. He took so long to name assistant coaches, to name a QB, and he NEVER gave credit to his coordinators. He almost never admitted faults of his own. He will learn from his mistakes and get better.

Will he ever learn to be a great motivator for a whole team? Maybe one day.

  • A sad but realistic story of career choices. I hope all assistant coaches will land on their feet and that CGM will continue to make the right coaching choices. The Gus Bus has to continue moving without second thoughts. The Auburn program is larger than any of the coaches.
