'Recruiting out of magazines,' defensive statistics, Tuberville's move, Cam's big show and more.

  • I don't remember many of the 4 and 5 star players who weren't highly thought of by many top schools. For some reason though, Auburn's top performing guys last year were the less coveted players.

I'm going with discipline, motivation and attitude as the problems.

Your best two examples of stars don't matter are Texas and USC. They've never recruited better and played more mediocre

Even during the 2010 season, I had more than one Auburn fan express to me that they "hated" all those high-scoring games. "That isn't football, or at least it's not Auburn football," was a common sentiment. Right now after 3-9 and 49-0, winning sounds pretty good anyway we can get it. But assuming the program starts winning regularly again, how long will it be before fan dissatisfaction over the style of play becomes an issue? Fact is, most Auburn fans want Auburn to play and win like a traditional SEC team, not like Oregon or Texas Tech. Most fans want to see hard-nosed defense shutting down other teams, not just a defense that tries to slow down the other team enough for us to eek-out a basketball-score victory.

Furthermore, assuming that having a top-5 or top-10 defense really is unrealistic, how long will Johnson be willing to stay, and what other top defensive coordinator will be willing to take the job?

Have to agree with you here. Most fans want to see low scoring defensive struggles for some reason. I don't really care as long as we win, but I wonder too how long before CEJ starts hearing the noise about our defense. We just have to understand that the defensive stats will be different for an offensive philosophy as a team. To rank in the middle of the West on defense might be good enough to win if the offense is ranked #1. Our identity will be offense the next few years if we are going to be successful, bottom line.

  • I do not care about the stars. I do not care about how your class is ranked after signing day. Seriously, I don't give two shakes about that. What matters is how that class looks 2 or 3 years in. I've been saying this for quite some time but not many agree. You'll never convince me otherwise. I think this thing about how a class is ranked on signing day has a lot to do with ego. Today, as I type this, I would not rank our 2010 and 2011 signing classes very highly.

  • I doubt this will be a concern with EJ. He would likely love to finish out his career at AU

  • PM, I understand that if an offense runs 80-90 plays a game that hopefully the score will be higher. However, the goal of a defense is 3 and out. If that occurs on a regular basic, wouldn't the defense doing their job and keeping the score on the opposite side down? Also, if the defense is consistently going 3 and out, they won't be on the field as long and shouldn't tire out later in the game, especially with rotation.

  • FINALLY, a comment about our paper champ recruiting classes under Chizik.

I've been saying this since September, but the "big cat weekends", "tiger prowls", and "family/fun" sales pitch is why we are in the situation we are today.

I don't expect Gus to have the recruiting success that Chiz and the troop clown show had on paper. But I do expect Gus's kids to have more success on the field. Will Gus still sell the auburn family atmosphere, yes. But Gus will also sell hard work, and the kids that one to go have "fun", they'll follow Troop to UGA, where they belong.

  • Chizik would have throttled down the spread. What a joke!

  • Phillip said: "A word of caution about defense in the Gus Malzahn era: While coordinator Ellis Johnson is confident that the Tigers can put a strong defense on the field with Malzahn's hurryup, no-huddle offense, that is almost certainly not going to translate into the kind of defensive statistics so many fans yearn to see.

If a team runs 85-90 plays per game, that is going to result in other teams getting more plays, too. Auburn is probably going to be more likely to win 35-21 than it is to win 21-7. It is not likely to, statistically, be in the top five or top 10 defensively. That's just the way it is. What matters is winning and losing. ... "

If you go 3 and out you can have good Defensive stats with any kind of offense.

  • I say player development and discipline were the major reasons for the teams dismal performance.

  • Unfortunately, it looks like they just weren't well-coached for whatever reason. Hence the house-cleaning. I really don't understand all of the hoopla over Gus doing that. After all, they did go 3-9, plus the fact Gus saw the program up-close and was qualified to make the decisions he made. That seems to get lost when discussing this.
