    And on this note, like we've discussed before, Auburn has traditionally done better than any major non state-named school with a few exceptions like Notre Dame which mostly do not have major state-named schools in their own state for competition.

  • The time is now, this cupboard is not bare! It's a long time till first game, attitudes can be changed quickly and Gus has cleaned out a lot of cancer. The attitude changes will go much smoother now, it will be simply "My way, or the highway". IMO, a new staff last year would have had us playing in a decent bowl with the talent we have and Gus's offense. I know we had to let Chiz crash and burn to fire him so quickly after our Natty, but my point is, The Time is Now. Not 3-4 years from now. Gus will have us in a nice bowl at this time next year!

    One thing to remember though is that during Tubbs good stretch of 23 out of 26, bama sucked, south carolina sucked, arkansas sucked and georgia was okay. LSU and Florida were the teams to beat in the conference then. I have always judged what to expect out of our team by the way we play LSU. If we beat them early in the season then it gives the team a huge mental lift and confidence going forward. Right now, in my opinion, the conference as a whole is the strongest it has ever been. Bama, Florida, LSU, Gerogia, and South Carolina are 10 win teams every season. Miss St., Texas A&M, and Arkansas are good. Ole Miss is getting better, Tennessee will eventually get better and freeking Vandy has the longest current SEC winning streak right now.

    aTm is "good". I think that at the end of the season they were close to the best in the SEC if not the best.

    I truely believe Gussy can get us back to the top. He's made great coaching hires (so far)... and as long as the defense improves, we can get back to the top. We have tremendous talent, now they have to be coached up. Take a look at Oregon... they run the HUNH and they NEVER have top recruiting classes, yet every year they are near the top. With our talent, the coaching staff that's been hired, and recruiting every year, we can surely do it. As long as our defense gets better, and back to what it used to be, Auburn can truely be a force. Imagine putting up 30 pts a game and having a great defense...

    Oregon does not play in the SEC WEST!! BIG DIFFERENCE in the level of competition!!megaphone

    I agree but I don't think they will be consistent 10 win teams in the future like the rest...

    My question is, what are the reasons? Obviously they're "state" schools, and that is a factor, but we're in a pretty good location recruiting wise, and obviously Auburn is a great place to experience college life and get a first class education. We have an outstanding football tradition, especially when you think about the advantages a state school has (I think Auburn is the only school of it's kind - a traditional agricultural or mechanical school - in the top 20 for all-time wins). So what are some of the other reasons it's harder for Auburn than the schools listed?

    PM, I'd like your thoughts on why it is harder at Auburn as well.

  • It's funny thinking about AU being the only SEC team to have TWO perfect seasons in last 10 years. I bet if you polled sports media around the nation with that question, most of them would guess it was either UAT or LSU. Seems unfair how many Nattys are awarded to our SEC "friends" with 1 or more losses, and we get shut out with a perfect record!
